A different sort of list
Jul. 24th, 2005 12:32 amI got my hair cut today. I hadn't had it cut in over a year- not that it matters, since I have the kind of thick, curly, wild hair that looks as styled after a year as it does five minutes after being cut- which meant that it went from being below my shoulder blades to above my chin. I keep trying to reach back and grab a handful to pull over my shoulder, but there's no longer any hair there. It's a terribly weird feeling.
This is my to-do list for the next fourteen days:
Take the GRE.
You know, study for the GRE. Because I haven't taken a math class in three years, and that could be a problem.
Write all those drabble challenges I asked for.
Write my
yaoi_challenge story, for the love of all that is good and holy.
Get on a plane to California and disappear for the next six weeks.
So, as you might know- or might not, since I'm not sure if I've ever mentioned in on this lj, mainly because anime and gay porn are so much more interesting- I'm studying archeology. Which involves going on digs. Occasionally digs in the middle of deserts without stores or roads or plumbing or cell-phone service or anything to live in other than tents or, worst of all, internet access.
Here's the website, if anyone is interested. It's conveniently free of any personal information on me, and therefore I share the link with everyone. Feel free to stalk the professor; I don't know the guy and am thus unconcerned for his safety from raving interwebs psychos.
I figure a disappearance for this long merits more of a warning than my usual day-before post. This way, if anyone has vital information (long-lost twins! secret identities! nervously anticipated declarations of love! C'mon, tell me at least one of you has just been waiting for the right time to tell me that you've been having an affair with my brother), I will actually be able to respond before I leave. Things tend to work out better that way.
The biggest problem, of course, is trying to decide what books to bring. On the one hand, six weeks. On the other hand, there's only so much luggage I'll be able to bring. I'm currently debating new, extremely long books versus old books that I know I won't mind rereading several times. It's the eternal question.
Also, did you know there's a livejournal song? With lyrics, even.

Date: 2005-07-25 10:35 pm (UTC)Ah, well: if you all crash lj, inevitably leading to the ultimate destruction of not only the internet, but all of civilization as we know it, at least I'll spend my last moments in ignorance.

Date: 2005-07-26 01:40 am (UTC)It may be a moot point, because it's not like I'm a fast writer at the best of times, and I'd be surprised if what I've written so far were a third of it. But I'll try for the fifth. It may give me a better chance of being ready on the seventh than trying for the seventh would have, besides.

Date: 2005-07-24 01:53 pm (UTC)Seriously, have fun. I would mix the new long books with the old books. I always hedge my bets.

Date: 2005-07-27 06:23 pm (UTC)Well, here's the website (http://www.theactorstheatre.org/season/calendar.html). They have performances Thursday-Sunday at 8pm. Which day would be best for you?

Date: 2005-07-28 01:24 am (UTC)Hmmm... You leave a week from this coming Sat? Oy... This week is out. Next week: Thursday is out. The weekend is up in the air. I will definitely have to get back to you on this. Ironically, I found the booklet I kept telling you about like 5 secs after I commented. :P

Date: 2005-07-28 05:12 pm (UTC)Hmmmm. We might not be able to do it then; I leave pretty early Sat. morning, so I'm not sure if I'll have the time to go out the night before. ;_;

Date: 2005-07-30 10:39 pm (UTC)P.S. I'm reading Neuromancer, not terribly impressed thus far. It's jolty, and I keep getting confused by all the jargon. It's very Blade Runner-esque, tho.

Date: 2005-07-31 07:12 pm (UTC)I wasn't too fond of it either, and I adore cyberpunk so much that I tend to love anything in the genre. Despite his reputation, Gibson always tends to write books that I feel "meh" about. I think my problem with him is that he's a plot-focused writer, while I much prefer more attention on the characters.
That first sentence's justifably famous, though.

P.S. Did you find out if they have snail mail?
P.P.S. Will you get cell phone reception all the way out there?
Hee, it definitely is cyber-punk. You would like the Wonderland Gambit by Jack L. Chalker. After reading Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep? and still reading Neuromancer, I'm sure it fits squarely in that category. ^^

Date: 2005-08-01 03:45 am (UTC)1. Doesn't look like it. Which sucks majorly. I want to get cool letters.
2. We're supposed to, but the only service the prof'd gaurentee was Verizon, and I have Sprint. But I think I will, at least occasionally.
I'll have to check that one out, then. You know, I went to Barnes&Nobles to buy that Stephenson book we were talking about- you know, the giant historical ones- and guess what? The paper back doesn't come out till next month, so they didn't have it, but since it's so soon, they didn't have any copies of the hard cover left either. The universe conspires against me!
