1. My old Microsoft Sculpt mouse was showing a lot of wear so I decided to check out other mice to see if there's some currently in production ergonomic mouse I could switch to instead, since the Sculpt has not been made for many years and I just have to buy whatever ones second hand sellers are still selling, and the price keeps going up and up. I decided to try the Logitech Lift, but I'm not sure it's right for me. The fit in my hand is so weird and just from using it a little tonight, I'm getting pain in my wrist, elbow, and shoulder. Not sure if getting used to it will fix that, but I'll try it at least one more day and see. The good news is that by switching mice I found what was preventing my PC from properly going into sleep mode! Apparently it was the Sculpt mouse! As soon as I switch the new mouse, it went to sleep after being idle for a few minutes. Before, it would act like it was going to sleep, but pop the screen back on immediately. Carla found some threads about this issue on reddit, so if I do go back to the Sculpt, hopefully I can fix the sleep issue.

If anyone has recs for ergo mice similar to the Sculpt in shape, let me know! It seems most ergo mice are more like the Lift in shape.

I just heard that [personal profile] minoanmiss has died suddenly and unexpectedly of cardiac arrest; doctors were unable to determine a cause.

I am absolutely in shock. We emailed a couple days ago. I had promised to make her some pottery mini-books ages ago, finally made her a set of her favorite books (The King Must Die, The Bull from the Sea, The Mask of Apollo, and Bujold's Falling Free), plus The Minoan Mer with her as the author. I emailed her to get her current address. I didn't tell her what I was sending, because I wanted it to be a surprise. She sent it and wrote, "thank you in advance :)" Yesterday I tried to mail them. The post office didn't recognize her address, so I emailed her to confirm it and was puzzled when I didn't get a reply as she tends to reply quickly.

I am kicking myself for not making/mailing them sooner. She would have loved them, and she only missed them by days. This is a tiny thing in the grand scheme of it but she was so filled with joy when people made things for her, and all our interactions along those lines were so bright and joyous. The icon is a hedgehog because she sent me a hedgehog magnet for my fridge, which is still there. I should have reached out more.

She sent me rainbow fudge with each layer a different flavor - cardamom and mango were among them - and it was so delicious that every now and then I'd hopefully suggest that she go into professional candy-making.

Her art was so charming and distinctive.

She had such righteous anger and a passion for justice.

She was so sweet and kind and thoughtful. Just a really good person all-round. We never met in person and now we never will.

Third of the Third.

Feeling accountably tired today - I'm not sure of the precise cause, but there's enough of them it's probably something I can point to. The weather, the loss of community members, peeking into the job market, pick something. The effect is the same of having me struggling to focus on editing, so in the end it doesn't much matter where it's coming from.

I did manage to peek into the job market and send something out. I did manage a decent workout. I did manage to cook some congee to use up some rice and stretch out some braised chicken a couple more days. Productive in ways most people would think of, but with little writing getting done, it doesn't feel quite that way to me. The solution is to try for bed and try again tomorrow.

I was in the middle of making snow-delayed hamantashn when I heard that [personal profile] minoanmiss who always raised a light for memory has gone out. She made art for my niece. I wrote "The House Snakes" for her. (She made art for it.) And once again the people who make this country so difficult to stay alive in are still burning and burdening this earth. I will raise a light, but I feel more like throwing a Molotov cocktail.

In a surprise turn of events, this weekend I started watching the Prince of Tennis anime from the beginning. Honestly, it's charming and well paced! I can see why I was so into it... 20+ years ago. I wouldn't say it's particularly mature; it is definitely a story about a 12 year old beating almost everyone at tennis and everyone talking about how cool he is. The adolescents are very adolescent - Kaido hissing like a snake is classic awkward 13-year-old behaviour.

I mostly remembered the important parts: the tennis and the cat. I had forgotten everything about Echizen's sleazy dad, and I would happily forget that all over again. I also forgot how long they drew out not letting you see how Tezuka plays tennis - I've watched 24 episodes, and I don't think you actually see him play until episode 25. There is a ton of filler, but the filler is all one episode fillers IIRC, so in that matter is vastly superior to, say, the endless Bleach filler arcs.

Overall it's feeling like light nostalgic fun.

I’m going to put my reviews of these two together because to me, although they’re very different in tone and in novel structure (and intent), the introduction of Ekaterin and the change in Miles’s life make them two halves of a heterogenous whole. I’m going to skip back and forth a bit.

1. Even though the only caffeine I had yesterday was in the morning, I had so much trouble sleeping, so I'm feeling pretty tired tonight. I am hoping that I will be able to get to sleep easily because of that. Fingers crossed!

2. I'm going to be making some store visits over the next few weeks to talk to the store managers and accounting staff about the upcoming new system and to see what current accounting practices are at each store to see what they need to prepare for, since the new system will have some big changes for invoice processing. I went to two stores today and am also kind of feeling worn out from so much talking, not just the lack of sleep, but it was nice to do something other than WFH or in the office.

3. The weather is much nicer today than it has been the past few days.

4. Chloe also approves of the new lounger but it's not as good as the ratty cardboard box next to it.
