True story, really.
Apr. 27th, 2005 11:04 pmOur GLBT student group, Fusion, did a "What is Yaoi?" meeting tonight. Some people from the manga club came out to do the talk, and they had a little powerpoint presentation all set with with lots of images from various series, most of which they knew but some of which I think they'd pulled off of random websites.
One of these happened to be the picture of Tsuzuki and Hisoka lying in cherry petals. They paused on this screen coincidentally and began to go off on a tangent about how yaoi is not at all realistic, and is based on a different set of visual conventions.
"I mean, look at this guy," one of the girls said, pointing to Tsuzuki. "Does he look like a man? He's too pretty, he looks feminine. It's all about flowers and bubbles."
The other girl pointed to Hisoka and said something in a low voice. "No, no, he's fine," the first girl said. "He's masculine. It's this one, his eyes... He's just so pretty."
...I'm taking this as proof that even people who have never seen the series know Hisoka's the kickass one.
Also: Happy birthday,
b_hallward!! <3 <3 <3 I hope you had a wonderful day.

Date: 2005-04-28 06:21 am (UTC)Not that I feel either Tsuzuki or Hisoka are good examples of exactly how "feminine" yaoi boys can look (and there's the whole thing about Yami not actually being yaoi in the source, but one point at a time). This is when you look up a pic of Rapunzel from The Ice-Cold Demon's Tale to really throw them for a loop.

Date: 2005-04-28 06:23 am (UTC)And thank you. It was good (except for the working overtime bit XP). But I'm eating a Tsuzuki-worthy slice of left-over cake right now, so life is good.

Date: 2005-04-28 02:54 pm (UTC)What you really want to do is hunt down a volume of Crystal Lord Opera. I found it in a Japanese bookstore about a year ago -- it isn't out in English yet and I can't read it. But pretty pictures.
It has one bishonen who is so feminine I saw him WITH HIS SHIRT OFF and my brain still registered him as female until I kicked it and pointed out the flat chest.
And just for fun, this guy seems to be one of those sick twisted power hungry types that likes to rape/seduce other slightly more masculine bishonen for kicks and to have power over them and stuff like that. But he looks like a girl. He looks like a girl with his shirt off.
There's a visual convention for you. *g*

Date: 2005-04-28 07:48 pm (UTC)I googled the name and came up with some images of the character I think you're talking about, and... wow. You're sure that's a guy? Even for yaoi that's pretty feminized.

Date: 2005-04-28 08:52 pm (UTC)I couldn't find any of the person I'm talking about. But think Count D and some of his elegant pets -- like the bird people. He looks like them.
And it isn't yaoi -- it's just shoujo. The main romance seems to be between the girl in the picture and the dark haired man who is the only other character I've found a picture of. The person I was talking about is the emperor of another land and has a... thing going on with a guy that looks just like the dark haired man only with white hair. White haired man poses with a lute while riding a horse. Pretty...
When I have time I should scan some pictures and spread the love. Because it should be translated. And no one has heard of it.

Date: 2005-04-29 03:54 pm (UTC)I hadn't heard of it before, but it does sound interesting. I wish I could read Japanese and get a hold of some of these cool things that haven't been liscened.
