Today in Japanese, we learned the words for America, Germany, France, Spain, and the USSR.
...Good to know these textbooks are up-to-date.
Then I left the classroom, accidentally ran straight into some girl, and apologized. In Japanese. Wow, because that's not embarrassing in any way. Hopefully she didn't notice.
And this is the phone conversation I had with my mother last night:
Mom: So, we're going to be giving out flu shots on Friday...
Me: That'll be crazy.
Mom: Yeah, people are already calling and asking how early they should come in.
Me: Did you hear about that lady who died while she was waiting for one?
Mom: Yeah, but there were 900 people there! You have to expect that someone's going to die!
Me: *scandalized* Mom!
Mom: It's just the law of averages.
My life is surreal.

Date: 2004-10-19 04:25 pm (UTC)Hee, my class too! Which book do you use? My class usess Basic Functional Japanese by the Japan Times. Though, we also learned that before the japanese thought to use Katakana for foreign place names, the old name for San Francisco was “Soko.” I don’t know what the kanji is though, and I really should stop being shy and ask the sensei what the kanji are.

Date: 2004-10-19 04:31 pm (UTC)Hee, that's cool. I don't know any kanji yet, just the katakana and about half the hiragana. Which means I'm doing a hell of a lot of reading of place names and foods, since though seem to be the most common words to put in katakana.

Date: 2004-10-19 04:28 pm (UTC)Hm. Was listening to NPR last night and the advice was, sure, but don’t put yourself in danger to get one. Meaning, if your health’s frail, standing in line in whatever near winter conditions there are for more than a few hours is not a good idea. *shrugs* Advice makes sense.

Date: 2004-10-20 10:21 pm (UTC)And hee! Have you said 'lol' out loud? I've never done that one, at least. Although I do say 'meh' and people have told me that's not a real word.
