brigdh: (Marriage Protection Week)

Taken from [livejournal.com profile] fyredancer

President Bush has declared next week to be 'Marriage Protection' Week. Read all about it here. Yeah. I'm just a little bit bitter.

[livejournal.com profile] ladysisyphus has a reactionary icon meme starting here, and [livejournal.com profile] burr86 gives a link to add 'anti-marriage protection week' to your LJ interests.

And while I'm sure this was done unintentionally, it's just a wonderful coincidence that October 12- the first day of this MP week- is the five year anniversary of Matthew Shepard's death.

So. Spread the word. I'm pissed off to the point where I don't even have anything to say about this.

I got about one and a half paragraphs into that article before the desire to be sick on it got overwhelming. Yeah, I'm married, but I'm bi, and I happened to meet the right man rather than the right woman.

*glomps Brigdh* Oh, you have the right to be mad. Bush is *so* dumb. I'm straight and I still think this is retarded >_> I'll be spamming people with these links from my LJ too, dear. And I will make icons. Ohh, pretty boyxboy icons.

*hugs* I think you should all just move to Canada. We at least respect 'teh gay', as fangirl-speak lovingly names it.

*twitches* You know, I really absolutely hate the Bush Administration. Especially Dubya himself. God, he's such a fucktard.

Lys is right, I'm gonna move to Canada when I grow up.

Plus, 'O Canada' has got to be easier to sing than our anthem.

This is going to sound odd, but I really don't get why everyone is so upset about it. I mean, I look at it and I just see Bush doing a political move that'll get his constitutency happy with him. *shrugs* I'm not thrilled with it, but I can see why he did it. But could someone explain why they're so upset about it?

Well, I responded, but it got too long for a comment, so it's here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/wordsofastory/58902.html).

Hope you don't mind me chiming in

1) This is a religious-based move. For the President to endorse it is in defiance of the principle of separation of Church and State and for our Constitutional freedom of religion. This would be like him saying that for a week we all have to pray as Jewish people. He doesn't have the right to tell us what religion to believe and/or act upon.

2) It is a movement of nothing but sheer homophobia. The endorsement on the White House's website puts it into very fluffy-sounding terms, but if you go to http://www.marriageprotectionweek.com you'll see that the point of the week is to "educate" people about the evil that is homosexuality. Furthering the example from above, this would be like unto him declaring "National Religious Protection Week" for the purpose of educating people about why we need to hate Lutherans.

3) Moreover, the Presidental endorsement lends a stamp of authenticity to the MPW movement. He's basically declaring that as Americans we're expected to hate gay people.

4) He's classless enough to endorse an anti-gay movement that is going to take place not only the day after National Coming Out Day, but the Anniversary of Matthew Shepherd's death. The whole thing is reprehensible as-is, but this bit does add an extra bit of bile to why we don't like it.

Those are only some reasons, I don't want to go on and on and hijack the thread, but does that help clear it up any?

Thanks for explaining. After reading a lot of the stuff now, I actually am against it. Considering I tend to agree more with conservatives than liberals, that's pretty freaking amazing. Congratulations.

Many moons ago I used to be a registered Republican, so I get that feeling.
