What did you just finish?
Freedom Song by Amit Chaudhuri. Three short stories which are connected by all clearly being based on the author's barely fictionalized personal experiences. There's not much plot here, or change, or character development, or any of that sort of thing. At least the writer is doing it on purpose, as he describes early on in the first story:

But why did these houses- for instance, that one with the tall, ornate iron gates and a watchman dozing on a stool, which gave the impression that the family had valuables locked away inside, or that other one with the small porch and the painted door, which gave the impression that whenever there was a feast or a wedding all the relatives would be invited, and there would be so many relatives that some of them, probably the young men and women, would be sitting bunched together on the cramped porch because there would be no more space inside, talking eloquently about something that didn't really require eloquence, laughing uproariously at a joke that wasn't really very funny, or this next house with an old man relaxing in his easy-chair on the verandah, fanning himself with a local Sunday newspaper, or this small, shabby house with the girl Sandeep glimpsed through a window, sitting in a bare, ill-furnished room, memorizing a text by candlelight, repeating suffixes and prefixes from a Bengali grammar over and over to herself- why did these houses seem to suggest that an infinitely interesting story might be woven around them? And yet the story would never be a satisfying one, because the writer, like Sandeep, would be too caught up in jotting down the irrelevances and digressions that make up lives, and the life of a city, rather than a good story- till the reader would shout "Come to the point!"- and there would be no point, except the girl memorizing the rules of grammar, the old man in the easy-chair fanning himself, and the house with the small, empty porch that was crowded, paradoxically, with many memories and possibilities. The "real" story, with its beginning, middle, and conclusion, would never be told, because it did not exist.

At least the writing is pretty? But yeah, I pretty much did want to yell "Come to the point!" The first short story is about a young boy visiting with relatives in 1970s Calcutta; the second about a young man who's a graduate student at Oxford and his memories of family in Bombay and Calcutta; and the third is about an extended family and friends in Calcutta in the early 90s (with the very, very minor mentions of Ayodhya in the background). None of them have much action or stuff happening, which makes them hard to review. I suppose if you like very slow-moving, detailed descriptions of daily life, this is the book for you!

The Gods of Gotham by Lyndsay Faye. A murder mystery set in 1845 in New York City. It's hard to say exactly what the mystery is without spoilers, because a significant part of the book is dedicated to the main character just figuring out what's going on, but it involves child prostitutes; religious clashes between Protestants and Catholics; clashes between American-born natives, Irish immigrants, and free blacks; the very beginning of the Irish potato famine; and contemporary medicine. All of this is complicated by the New York City police force being absolutely brand-new, which means no one really knows how to go about things like arresting a suspect or investigating a crime.

I had a few quibbles with the book, particularly with the use of contemporary slang. If a character says "Wow, this is flash!", I don't actually need the narrator to stop and explain to me that flash means good. It's obvious from context. And even if it wasn't, there's a glossary in the front of the book; having the narrator constantly translate the slang in-story is just distracting and irritating. There were a few things I didn't like at the opening- mostly characters who seemed to be very much cliches- but it turned out actually to be a case of the narrator making assumptions that were later proven wrong, so I liked how that developed. Not the greatest book, but definitely interesting enough that I'll be checking out the sequel.

What are you currently reading?
Dangerous Women edited by George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois. I wanted to read the new ASOIAF short story (turns out it's terrible!) and then figured that I may as well read the other stories. Short stories of all genres (so far Western, fantasy, historical fiction, noir, and urban fantasy) focusing on "dangerous women".

The Adventures of Feluda by Satyajit Ray. Short stories about the Bengali version of Sherlock Holmes. This is, uh, incredibly 70s-esque.

Wait... Gotham is a real thing? And not just a Batman thing?! Or was the book you read a Batman book?

ALSO YES THAT GRRM SHORT STORY WAS THE WORST. Like I've read of his other short stories - including ones he wrote when he was still young and inexperienced and trying to sound all manly and serious-writerly but this one is WORSE THAN THEM ALL. So much slaughter; so much show-not-tell; so much boredom. And so sooooo sexist as well. I think he was doing a metatexty thing about how history gets recorded (and particularly how women get treated by history-writers) buuuuuuuuut whatever I wasted precious minutes of my life wading through that. I can't wait to hear your impressions of the other stories! I have not read the anthology yet and can't decide whether I should. Like - I love anthologies - but I deeply mistrust the premise of 'dangerous' women. Though I guess it can't actually get worse than that OTT dragony gorefest.

Hmm. I feel obliged to add that SOME of GRRM's short stories were actually great - there's a werewolfy one and a cyberpunky mindgame one I loved. And it's fascinating to see his themes (names/visuals/worldbuilding/dynamics) reflected/expanded in ASOIAF. But most of them were average tbh.

Ha, Gotham is a nickname for the real NYC, but then Batman stole it for his city. Which I suppose is fair, because it's clearly just a noir version of NYC. Gotham isn't as common as 'the Big Apple', but you'll occasionally see stores called Gotham Pizza or things like that.

IT WAS SO BAD. It was like a wikipedia article- where maybe if you took the time to read a whole book about it, it would be very exciting, but as it is it's just names and dates and no characterization or significance. There were no real motivations for why anyone chose to ally with one side or another, or what the difference between two sides was. Which... maybe was the point? Civil war being pointless? But it's still not interesting to read about. I agree with you about him probably trying for a meta history thing, but he didn't go far enough with it for it to really be meaningful.

None of the other stories have stood out much so far, though I'm only about 1/4 through the book. There was a Jim Butcher one that was also terrible! I haven't read anything else by him, though I've been sort of thinking about reading the Dresden Files, about which I have heard both good and bad things. I am not endeared to him by his 'Dangerous Woman' literally winning the day through her hotness. LITERALLY. SHE FIGHTS A RACE OF SUPERNATURAL BEINGS WHO REALLY LIKE "BEAUTIFUL THINGS". The phrase 'smoking hot' is repeated.

I haven't read anything else by GRRM, though I've been meaning to check out the Dunk & Egg short stories. I'm also vaguely interested in his vampires-on-steamboats novel, although 'Fevre Dream' is a pretty terrible title.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY LIKE A WIKI ARTICLE and not a very good one. And yes I think the point is that civil wars are horrible and pointless but like ugh I wish it hadn't been set up like a gender-powerplay. AND THEN THE WAY IT ENDED EUGH.

The Dunk & Egg stories are cool. Quite iddy! Quite hopeful! Kind of... more generic fantasy than I expected but I loved them nonetheless.

My favourite short stories are The Skin Trade - which is kiiiiiiiiiiinda like a morbid intro to Bran - and The Glass Flower - which is DEFINITELY a morbid intro to Daenerys. I recommend them both! (Also there's a short story with characters called Rob and Lya and AAAAH IT'S JUST SO WEIRD OKAY. Like a really trippy AU of Lyanna Stark.)

The thing that annoyed me most about the ending was that it just abruptly stopped. Like, nothing was resolved! Nothing has stopped or begun! But a lot of the character have died by now, so let's just end here! This is not an ending!

In what way was it sexist? I haven't read any of Martin's short stories (currently busy with ADWD), but the lack of sexist assumptions about what women are like is one of the best things about that series, imhoe, so that's disappointing. (The way he apparently feels he has to tell us about every single female character's breasts is eyeroll-inducing, but I'm probably hardened by many volumes of The Wheel of Time.)

I agree that GRRM's awareness of sexism and the way he writes gender is one of the best things about the series! (The breasts thing is - well like. I can understand it in Cersei's case! But whyyyyy does Dany keep thinking about her nipples. Whyyyyy.)

I am pretty sure that the short story was intentionally sexist - like! The story is an 'excerpt' from a Westeros history book and written by a male maester. Because of this format it's very impersonal - and because of that the female characters are never more than threatening pinups. (Some male characters are afforded the kind of sympatheticness that people sometimes get in history books.) Plus the fact that they're all (with the exception of one character who appears for like half a page) really ruthless and tragic. It's kinda like reading about a bunch Cerseis - narrated from the outside and without any consideration for their motivations and traumas.

Oh, cool. If it's just the viewpoint character it's easier, but if it's a story about dangerous women, um, maybe he could have picked a different POV character?

He really could have. Or just a different theme than "scary women with scary dragons kill everyone and also fail at what they want (not that we know why they want it)".

I'm sure the book is nothing like that, but I have this image of The Gods of Gotham as a comedy of errors, where everyone keeps doing policing wrong.

Anything good in Dangerous Women?

That would probably be a better book than what it actually is. (I liked it! Just not as much as I think I'd like the police comedy of errors.)

I'm only about 1/4 through, but there was a pretty good story about one of Eleanor of Aquitaine's daughters, and an interesting noir story clearly inspired by real life cases like Casey Anthony/Jon Bennet Ramsey/other mothers accused of killing their children. But so far the bad stories are outweighing the good ones.
