I know I haven't posted in about two weeks, but that is because my life has been crazy.

My grandfather died, my apartment was robbed (of, among other things, my laptop with the un-backed-up syllabus and information for the class I was teaching in a week), I went to Ohio for the funeral, two (of three) guys were arrested for the robbery so I had to go testify in court, I got a new laptop, my class started and I had no time to do anything other than furiously rewrite my lectures and find new scans of the readings, I went to Boston for four days. Whew.

And so in all that, I have not been entirely keeping up with LJ. But now, finally, I'm back! So, what all's been happening with you?

I am so sorry about your grandfather. (And all the other crap, of course, which is unbelievably beastly albeit not in the same category of irrevocable loss.) I can only hope that having about ten years' worth of badness dumped on you at once will be repaid by ten years or so in which only good things happen to and around you.

You missed the zombie apocalypse meme, part the ten billionth; He Who Must Not Be Named going berserk, trying to pick a new fight with everyone on the web, and deleting his LJ again; and I'm not sure there was much of anything else.

Oh, and in all the strangeness that is my day-to-day life, I think the very strangest is that as of yesterday, I have finally succeeded in making a crown setting for a faceted gemstone that works the way it's supposed to. It kind of looks like miniature Barad-dur as constructed by drunk demonic construction crews, mind you; but it holds the stone even when turned upside-down and shaken, and it manages to look as though I meant to do that. Big excitement, huh? But honest to God, I never thought I'd see the day.

Thank you.

I did manage to catch some of that fight! (And it's continuation since this post.) It's awful, though it does have a bit of that car-crash-fascination for me.

Congratulations! That sounds really exciting. I was starting to get interested in making jewelry- not the sort of stuff you do, but the 'if I put these beads on a string, it'll be pretty!' type of thing, but I haven't in nearly a year now. I didn't have room in my luggage to take supplies to Wales or India, and haven't got back into it since. But I should; I enjoyed it. You should post photos of yours! I'd love to see it.

D: Augh that is a heaping pile of awful. I am sorry to hear your life has been so stressful. I hope things improve.

Thank you!

(And thanks for the note! I'm terrible about keeping up when people change their LJ handles.)

[livejournal.com profile] rm said you had a family funeral to attend, without giving details. I'm entirely sorry for your loss.

Sorry y'all were robbed. Glad they caught two of them(so far!)

Other than that, Mrs.Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play? Was wondering how teaching your first class was going. What plan did you go with? Do you like it so far? Are your students stupid lumps nice?

I hope Boston was the well derserved break you deserve so well!

Thank you!

It's really great! I love teaching, and these students are wonderful. They've been participating a lot, which was my goal, and I'm so glad it's working.

Excellent! Good students deserve good teachers, good teachers deserve good students, so that sounds preeminently satisfactory.

sounds busy... sorry to hear about your grandfather (heard abou the robbery etc from rm - so glad they caught them) - hope you found a new place by now

I'm nervous... had a job interview last Wednesday and still waiting to hear if I've got the job... I'm used to working in the National Health Service where they give you a reply within 24 hours - this is in industry: more money, less holiday and I'd get to speak my mothertongue I've barely used 20 years and help build a new business in solar power technology... want it

Thanks. We're still looking, but we've got a while.

Good luck!

Oh, right, you asked about me.

We had to wait out a tornado for a couple of hours the other night, but it never came near us. Not a lot of news here, otherwise.
From: [identity profile] stardragonca.livejournal.com
We have had one of Alberta's only two killer tornadoes pass over us as it was forming, and another stop forming right on top of us, so that's about as much excitement as you can have without poison darts!
This was more like "Hmmm, if the thunder stops, I bet I could go online and tweet our demise..." until the TV alert noise came back on.
Your life seems much more exiting relative to mine.(Harappan cities...historic legislation...gundas...wild undergrades!)

Read some about this already but aaa <3 So glad you guys are okay, and I'm glad you got things started okay despite the troubles! And I'm sorry about your grandfather. I hope things keep going smoothly from here.

I didn't realise the family funeral you had to attend was your grandfather's; I'm so sorry. I'm glad two of the guys from the robbery were caught, and I hope the apartment searching resolves itself quickly. (Ugh, moving.)

Haven't been doing much, just writing and working my way through a GRRM rereading marathon for the new book. Still not finished, but I'll be passing work today and I'll drop in to see the new one.

Thank you.

Yeah, me too. I just started A Game of Thrones, so it'll be a while before I'm ready for the new book, but I'm 80th on the library's wait list, so I've probably got some time.

A lot of that sucked, and I'm sorry!

I'm glad about Boston and the new laptop though. Is it shiny?

Thank you.

It is! I got a Macbook Pro (the stolen one was just a Macbook), because the woman at the Apple store convinced me it was the better buy. I'm really enjoying it, though for some reason I keep accidentally right-clicking.

Yeah, the Apple mechanics seem to adjust a lot with every new incarnation.
