1. I have finally seen the new BBC Sherlock! While I absolutely adored the first episode, the other two were more meh for me. The second one in particular was just dumb in all sorts of ways (though I did love that the plot turned on the London AZ). There are apparently only two smugglers of Chinese antiquities in all of London? HAHAHAHAHAHA- NO. Also, it is way harder to get that sort of thing through airport security than the show seems to be aware of. I've seen people stopped for having modern replicas of blank terracotta pots. And I suspect the jade hairpin at the end would legally have to be repatriated to China, so no one's getting those nine million pounds.

I've spent a lot of time on the ethical implications of antiquities in the art market! It is rarely useful information.

Overall, I enjoyed, though I'm not particularly inspired to write fanfiction. But I'm very much looking forward to more.

2. Have you seen the trailer for The Eagle? Because if not, you should watch it right now. It is possibly the slashiest movie ever. I became a member of the fandom about 1:06 in, when the cynical guy tries to slit the throat of the other guy, and then they bond. HELLO MY FAVORITE STORY TROPES, HOW ARE YOU. I cannot wait for this move to come out.

3. I was in London yesterday, walking down the street, when I heard someone call my name. I dismissed it at first, because, well, I don't know anyone in London. But it turned out to be a friend from school (who is himself supposed to be in China right now, to make it even weirder), also walking down a street in London. And not even a particularly tourist-y part of London! My life is so random sometimes.

4. What Teachers Make (video). Spoken word poem by Taylor Mali. Really wonderful.

5. I have no context for this picture (apparently it's from a production of Twelfth Night?) but it is AMAZING.

6. Still working on that story.

I feel like there should be a competition to see how few seconds into the trailer people join The Eagle fandom.

I suspect the "get on your knees" line will also win high numbers.

I would kill to interview the director/writer of this thing, just so I could be like "you know you made the Internet explode. Was that on purpose?"

ETA: Also, HOLY CRAP, that picture, and HOLY CRAP, I need that outfit.

Re: 2 - They had me at shirtless Jamie Bell. Actually, they had me at Donald Sutherland for entirely different reasons, but... oof. I ship it so hard I think I pulled something. 0_o

And haha, yeah, the second ep of Sherlock was the most faily and ridiculous. I was partial to the third, because I think it's an interesting take on Moriarty, but the first one was probably my favorite. Have you seen the unaired pilot? Because the script is a lot tighter, but everything else is worse. It's pretty fascinating.

I don't comment here enough, but damn that trailer!

I think the whole "Sword and Sandal" genre is incapable of being non-slash. It just can't!

"A Study in Pink" is most certainly the best one. The second one was... a bit of a mess, but the third was really good imo. But yeah, the first ep was the best!

My roommate is a historian. The point at which she decided not to care too much about historical accuracy in shows and movies was when she was watching Anya's backstory in Buffy with the rabbits and said to me, "she's not of the correct social class to have domesticated rabbits that far north" because an article (of the sort that five people in the world might read) had just come out on the topic. (Rabbits, not Buffy.)

I had to watch that trailer with the sound off (because I'm at work) and I could still feel the slashiness radiating off it like heat off a pitch-black car in the middle of July. Possibly seeing it with actual dialogue will cause my brain to melt. I am now all excited for this movie! (Plus it'll be a great excuse to reread the book it's based on, yay.)

Oh, wow! Thank you. And now I feel doubly silly, since I suspect heard about that production last summer. I should have made more of an effort to go see it!

Hahaha.

Yeah, I thought the reinterpretation of Moriarty was really interesting, but I kind of need to see more to decide if I liked it or not, if you know what I mean. I'm definitely looking forward to more episodes! I have not seen the unaired pilot, but that sounds quite intriguing.

(No worries!)

Ha, that's a fantastic story. I have mostly learned not to care, but Sherlock seemed so smart in other ways that I was disappointed to see it fall down there.

The Eagle: hello, Jamie Bell. &hearts
But, yes, you're right, made to explode the internets or something.

Sherlock! Second ep was kind of awful (Asian mafia, really? Is that episode 778326 already and there's nothing left but the stereotypes?), but overall loved it... When are next episodes going to air, do you know anything?

Yeah, the second episode of Sherlock makes me wince, I've not rewatched it aside from when getting others into the series.

I adore the first and third, though--Moriarty is so very, very yes, I am sad there seems to be a sizable chunk of the fandom that hopes he isn't the "real" one.

From: [identity profile] airspaniel.livejournal.com
That's fair. I had to rewatch it a few times to decide that I really liked Moriarty, but based on some not terribly cryptic yet still vague spoilers for the next series, I'm sure I'll have another chance to evaluate. I'm really, really excited for more episodes!

Intriguing is one way to describe it. It's worth a watch if you've seen the whole thing, but I don't know if I'd be half the fan I am if it'd been the first thing I ever saw of Sherlock. Thank god they got Paul McGuigan and Euros Lyn in to direct!

Ahahahah. That trailer! It couldn't be slashier if it was actually trying. Thank you so much for making my lunch break a little more enjoyable. XD

It should come as no surprise to anyone that I freaking love Twelfth Night. That promo shot? YESPLZ. Unf.

Also, I hadn't realized you hadn't yet seen Sherlock.

Yeah, I want to watch the episode again, knowing what's coming. I might have more opinions then!

Ha, yeah, that's probably true of a lot of unaired pilots. I used to have a video tape of the unaired Buffy pilot, and it was pretty bad. Though interesting!

Haha, very true! I suppose there's just something about men traveling around together, sharing trust and violence and sometimes inn beds, saving each other's lives, often with secret angsty backstories, that lends itself to slash. I can't imagine why! ;)

SO MUCH SO!

I know, right? Asian mafia PLUS long-separated siblings PLUS of course the Chinese guy is an acrobat PLUS orphans PLUS bizarre Chinese circus. So many cliches.

I think I heard they're trying for Autumn 2011 for more, though as far as I know they haven't started shooting yet, so that date may change.

Oh, I hadn't heard that! It never occurred to me that he might not be the real Moriarty. I was a bit surprised they used the big arch-enemy so soon, though. They'll have to back away from having him be behind every single mystery for a full season, I'd think.

In general, I'm not very into Shakespeare's comedies, but Twelfth Night is one of the good ones. And that production looks AWESOME.

Yeah, I am late to the fandom party.

Aha, there's actually a decent chunk that want Molly to be Moriarty or Moran. I'm hoping they'll do something to resolve the cliffhanger in the next episode, but not sure I'd want it to end it or just lay off Moriarty for a bit.

Moffat gave 3 words to hint what'll be in next season, if you're curious. (http://blog.tvguide.co.uk/?tag=reichenbach)
