Feb. 2nd, 2007 08:06 pmThe first issue of
imaginarybeasts went up a few days ago. Like
bb_shousetsu, Imaginary Beasts is a webzine of original stories, with each issue based around a theme (but the authors don't use pen names, so I can stalk my favorites, wheeeee). This time's was, well, 'Imaginary Beasts'. You can read all the stories and see the art here.
Particular Recommendations:
The Legendary Spiny Cat of London. Oh, this is excellent. Far and away my very favorite, the main character's voice is hilarious and spot-on. A shallow party-boy meets a talking cat on a bus.
Just Breathe. Short, but with a nicely creepy and poetic tone. A story about selkies, but with a twist on how the myth usually goes.
The Sun Roads. Yeah, no duh Brigdh adored the story set on a desert caravan that involves theif gangs. But nicely told, and with huge amounts of interesting worldbuilding. This actually felt like it should have been the beginning of a novel rather than a short story, but I still enjoyed reading it.
School of Seven Wonders. Seven vignettes of the various monsters and ghosts around a school; some are funny, some are creepy, some are lovely. I really like the language of this one.
If you like the idea, by the way, the second issue's theme will be "Love Story". Get more details and sign up here. (Uh, I just realized that post is locked. Feel free to join the community, or to just look at the userinfo, which includes all the really detailed stuff anyway).

Date: 2007-02-08 04:04 pm (UTC)And I saw your latest entry and oh wow, it sucks that your bag was stolen. This is no help at all, but you have my sympathy, and I don't think it's strange for you to feel upset about it. I certainly hope the thief gets his karmic payback.
