This is the last day to claim something for
springkink! Go read the prompts here (first half | second half), and see if any inspire you. Stories aren't due until April, and can be as short as 100 words. C'mon! There's all sorts of fandoms; everything from YnM and Saiyuki and Final Fantasy games I can't tell apart to Swordspoint and Melusine.
31_days's prompts for February are up! This month's theme is fairy tales; I am so happy. I really like these prompts, unlike the last few months, so I'm looking forward to writing some pieces for them.
remixredux sign-ups are open! And have exploded. Dude, it's going to be huge this year. But it's one of the most unique and fun challenges, and everyone should come play. If you don't have enough stories (at least five over 500 words in a fandom are required), you can always volunteer to pinch-hit. You have until Feburary 10th to sign up.
wishkisses is open for new requests and stories until Valentine's Day. Go here to see if there's any request that interests you (stories only have to be either 250 or 300 words), or to make a request yourself- you get to make one free, even without having written a story!
021407: A Valentine's Day Letterbox. Go and leave a comment for someone you love, or see if you've gotten one yourself, anonymous or not.
Apparently you can download movies for free off of the Internet Archive! Who knew? And not even bittorrent, just plain old right-click-save. That is awesome. I'm eyeing M, because I've seen
b_hallward reference it so often that I want to watch it.
And a random collection of animal videos I've watched in the last few days:
The cutest kitten ever. I mean, I don't even like cute things that much, and this made me squeak at the screen. SO. CUTE.
A coelacanth, a strange, tiny, ancient sea creature, which walks on legs. Pretty awesome.
Frilled shark, normally a deep-sea creature, comes up into the shallows long enough to be videotaped.
Octopus vs Shark! And the octopus wins.
Also, in case you missed it the last time I posted it: Alec fst! With electronic music. Oh, I love it. It makes me want to dance which, man, I need to go clubbing this weekend.

Date: 2007-02-01 11:43 pm (UTC)And I've just done the Remix signup. So I've just been looking at the rules, and feel I should mention that you only need five 500-word stories in one fandom to qualify, although the entries have to be a minimum of 1000 words this year. So more people can play! And everyone should, because it's such a cool, writerly challenge (and you don't even have to think up your own damn plot, how great is that?).

Date: 2007-02-01 11:51 pm (UTC)Oh! Thank you, I'd gotten that mixed up. And a good thing it's only 500 words, or I wouldn't manage to qualify for Saiyuki. I'd be so embarrassed to have signed up for something against the rules.
I do love not having to come up with a plot. But I love the whole idea, the different versions of the same story. I love covers and remixes in music too, actually. (I decided The Smith's 'There is a light that never goes out' is an Alec song, and now have 12 different versions of it.)

Date: 2007-02-02 02:58 am (UTC)But you shouldn't spoil the end of the shark/octopus video! It's so much fun to watch people go "oh, the poor octopus--- hey, wait a second!" :D

Date: 2007-02-02 03:10 am (UTC)Isn't the walking fish neat? I didn't realize how tiny it was until the fish swam overhead.
And I guess I should leave the ending of the octopus video vague! I hadn't thought of it. *grins*

Date: 2007-02-02 05:56 am (UTC)Am doing my usual shriek-squick thing with remix, though. I am obviously far too egotistical compared to the average fanwriter - while the idea of someone writing fic for my original stuff (or even based off fanfic) doesn't bother me, the idea of someone taking one of my stories and rewriting it... gah. *twitch*

Date: 2007-02-02 06:50 am (UTC)Mmm, that's interesting. I don't think I'd call it egotism, though; I don't mind the idea of someone remixing my stories, but not because I hate them or think they're terrible. I just really like to see people do different versions of the same, or multiple interpretations of a story, so remix is pretty much designed for me. Though I do admit I look forward to writing a story more than getting one, but I'm that way with all challenges. I never much care about what I'll receive.

Date: 2007-02-02 02:52 pm (UTC)But as for egotism, well, I find Remix a glorious exercise in egotism. It's two ego trips in one! First, you get to rewrite somebody else's story and do it your way this time. And second, some
poor foolgifted person has to spend immense amounts of time and thought on your work, so that in the end you get back what amounts to a strange but intense piece of feedback on it. In fact, my main emotional block with Remix signups is that the egotism payoff is so high that it makes me feel guilty.no subject

Date: 2007-02-02 02:02 pm (UTC)I feel oddly sorry for the shark, and I don't even like them. Just swimming along, minding their own business, and then they get killed by an octopus. Man. That's rough.
I feel rotten asking this, but would yu mind sending me the Alec fst? I can't download the links for some odd reason, they just keep opening in Quicktime, and I really like them.
Also, today is the day I finish Swordspoint since I opted to write it in remix, oh god.

Date: 2007-02-02 07:41 pm (UTC)I know, poor shark. It seems like he didn't even have a chance; the octopus just took him down.
Oh, how strange. That didn't happen to me; I wonder why you had a problem. Anyway, if sendspace works for you, ta-da (http://www.sendspace.com/file/6nxy3x)! If not, let me know and I'll try someplace else.
Wheeeeee, Swordspoint! ♥ This means the remix pool will consist of you, me, and
