Twice now I have gone to a library to pick up a book, which the website assures me is available, only to find it was checked out before I got there. Dude. How many people in New York City could possibly be doing research on Egyptian mummy tattoos at the same time? (Don't answer that.) The internet tells me that the public libraries also have a copy, but it's only available for reference. As I have class all day tomorrow, am leaving to go home for Thanksgiving early the next morning, and won't be back until a few hours before the project is due, this is really not helpful. Maybe I'll get up early enough tomorrow to have time to read it in the library before going to class.

...yeah, I'll wait until you've all stopped laughing at the thought of me getting up early. Though I do need to visit the same section of town to buy a present for the wedding I'm going to on Sunday, so a miracle could happen.

Between this project and several other things I have going on at the moment, my room is mainly decorated in tottering stacks of books, accentuated by a carpet of journal articles. They're even taking over my bed, though granted, that's because books are fucking heavy, so I tend to drop them in the first open space available as soon as I walk through the door. I wonder what the limit is to the number of books I can have checked out at a time, because I suspect I'm going to hit it soon.

Now, if it were tottering stacks of novels, that would be normal and I would feel at home. Instead, they're all ancient, dusty volumes, bound in plain, solid colors, and I feel very much like the poor student in a story about bohemian Paris. I should be living in a garret and drinking absinthe.

I am a total absinthe-enabler.

*laughs* I probably wouldn't like it in real life; I don't like bitter things, and I totally have no head for alcohol.

But. It feel so appropriate, you know?

Well the alcohol doesn't get you fucked up. It's conveyance. But yes, very bitter, even with sugar.

Have you had it? I thought it was illegal in the US.

It is, and yes. Often. I had it out often in Australia and ave been buying it from local stealth producers for about 6 years. that said, it was so weird the first time I was able to order it in a restaurant.

It does feel like a weird thing to order in a restaurant. Wrong century, or something. But I'm sure I'd do it anyway, if I had the chance, just for the experience.

I had all these fancy cocktails with it in Sydney. Ther ewas one that was apple and pearjuiece with it, garnieshed with shredded carrots, and it was the most perfect accompanyment to Japanese food I've ever had.

Oooooh. That does sound good, though adding Japanese food to the equation just seems to make the whole experience even weirder.

Sydney is home to a place considered to have the best non-japanese sushi chef in the world. And seriously, it was spectacular. he prepares with a knife with his name engraved on it in Japanese that was given to him by his teacher. Nice guy too.

Ah, you make me jealous. My favorite sushi chief is back in Ohio, though I suppose I should make a point of visiting him when I'm there for Thanksgiving.

Spicey tuna roll at this place was wrapped with seven different kinds of whole dried peppers. It was amazing, although it almost killed me.

What sushi places have you found here? I know a couple of really good ones, some of which are even pretty cheap.

Oh my god. That would be excellent.

I've stuck to the chains so far- Teriyaki Boy and Go Sushi, in particular- because I was enamoured of the insane cheapness, which is like nothing I'm used to for sushi. But I guess fresh fish would be cheaper here, since it's much closer to the ocean.

Oh yeah. There are so very good, very affordable places.

The two best cheap ones I know are both in teh east village:

Takahachi on A and about 6th (it's set in front he street and up about 3 steps). It's their specials in particular you want to keep an eye on -- they get amazing Toro in. And you can also order tempura by the piece there, so it's good for a snack.

Further down is Eashi on A and 3rd; it looks like a dive, but the quality is good and if you demonstrate and knowledge of sushi or Japanese they will frequently provide you with tastes of things unasked for.

When youa rein the $$ check out Tatany 52, which is very very very very excellent.

Finally, if you want to trek to Brooklyn, there's a place in Cobble Hill called Osaka, which is very cheap and insanely has sushi as good as any I've ever had at Nobu.

Wow, thank you so much! I really do appreciate people telling me good places to go, as I'm still feeling my way out. And trying to find the secrets of New York by experimentation is insanely slow.

Also, this is terribly convenient, since I live in the East Village. Thanks again!

I used to live on 3rd and C.

If you haven't tried Sunburnt Cow (9th and C) do -- the food is fantastic. It's an Aussie place, and is evil mobbed on teh weekends, but on Monday nights I believe all entrees are $5 (granted, it's tapas style, so you might well want 2), but really, a fabulously good deal.

Also, you do know about snack dragon taco shack on B and 2nd? Greatest tacos ever!

These are both new to me! Thank you, really. I love having good places to go eat.
