Well, no wonder I was having such a hard time tracking down the original reference for some data I need. I wasn't looking in French journals from the '20s. If I thought I could get away with it, I'd cite some random modern summary, too.
*sigh* I don't think my French is up to this. We will see, I suppose, once I get around to getting it out of the library, since the internet is less than obliging with providing me with a digital copy.
I am having way too much fun reading excavation reports from the 30s and 40s, in the meantime. They all sound like they were written by crazy gentlemen explorers; my favorite so far opens with: "One day just before the outbreak of the last war, the groom and I were exercising my horses...". Nowadays people try to be, you know, scientific, which is more useful, but so much less entertaining.
