This Is Just to Say William Carlos Williams

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

This is such a great poem (though, now, whenever I read it I think of [livejournal.com profile] p_zeitgeist's story with Muraki, Hisoka and the melon). Not that that's a bad thing, mind...

Hee! I'd forgotten that she quoted this in that story, but it is such a perfect fit for the characters; the last lines of this poem always make me think of slow, satisfied, slightly evil smile.

Fun! It reminds me of a Hafiz poem, which I think is the best example of how much he was on the happy crack. Or possibly it was the translator's fault. (I can't find my Hafiz book, so this is from an online source who didn't say who translated it.)

Today
The vegetables would like to be cut

By someone who is singing God's Name.

How could Hafiz know
Such top secret information?

Because
Once we were all tomatoes,

Potatoes, onions or
Zucchini.

Hee, I've read this one before. ^^ Actually, it was another friend on LJ who posted it.

Yeah, this is one of the poems everyone knows. I love it so anyway.
