I've finally given in to the inevitable and have decided to go ahead and convince someone to buy for my birthday get a new copy of Windows. However, it turns out you can't simply buy Windows XP. No, you have to buy Windows 98, and then get the XP upgrade.

*insert scream of rage here*

Also, people are talking about each other's icons in the comments to my story, but not the actual story, so I keep getting new comments and getting excited and then being disapointed. It's a cycle of woe!

But in better news, it's my birthday next week, on the 10th! I'll be 22. If anyone would like to send me a card or something, my address is up here (yes, it's under a filter. I'm not quite comfortable with giving my address out to the entire internet). Don't feel obligated, but I thought I'd mention it.

You sure you want to buy a copy? ::confused::

OMG WHAT ARE WE DOING FOR YOUR BIRTHDAY?!?!?!?!?!

P.S. This icon is for you. ♥

I don't really have any other options at this point.

Heh, I dunno.

Eeeeeeee! That is the best icon ever! Is it a quote from something?

Dude, that thing with the comments is just wrong. Isn't that illegal or something?

Besides, why are they not talking about the hotness instead? Where are their priorities?

Well, in the ancient tradition of livejournal, as soon as I complained publicly the problem resolved itself.

...there should be some sort of name for when that happens, as it's way too often for coincidence. Murphy's Law, but in reverse: things start actually working just when it's embarassing.

Hey, I didn't know you still needed it, I could still let you leech off my copy.

I don't know if it would help, honestly. I did manage to find one other person who had a Windows CD, but since I couldn't use the activation code (since, obviously, they were using it), it only worked temporarily and then my "free trial" ran out.

I assume the same thing would happen with yours. Unless it's a hacked copy? *looks hopeful*

Nah, I don't have a hacked copy. But why couldn't you use the activation code? You don't have to register it do you?

Yeah, you can only use it a little while before it has to be registered. Argh, I hate Windows. Such a monopoly.

I bought a copy of Word and Excel and put them on a couple of computers of mine (and one of my parents'). Once you use the activation code, you have to phone Microsoft and tell them you're reinstalling it. They give you a new code and you're good to go. Maybe the person who originally registered the Windows XP could install it on your computer, phone them, and say they were reinstalling? I've never had any problems with having several active copies of Word/Excel... though I don't know if Windows XP would be different, since it automatically updates itself. Anyway, good luck! Microsoft is such a pain.

Hmmm. I could try it, but I don't think it'd work. One of the other problems was that she has a HP, and I have a Dell, and there were problems obviously already developing from that clash even before my time ran out. I suspect that there's specific activation codes for each type of hardware.

...still, even if I try it and it doesn't work, that's better than spending a bunch of money I didn't need to. Thanks so much for the suggestion! I'd just automatically assummed you could only use an activation code one time.

I have a copy of XP upgrade that I don't need anymore because I bought a whole new 'puter. LMK if you want it, I'll mail it to you. (Can't help with '98...might want to ask at the lab at your school?)

I think I'm actually going to try sending it to a computer store near here that will install both. Thank you, though!
