You know, I gave a presentation on Saiyuki for one of classes this morning, and I can only say that I'm glad I got my copy of Reload afterward, or I would have been incoherent with glee.

I'll write up more coherent thoughts later, but: incoherent with glee.

Hah... yes, very lovely stuff. The only thing that really bothered me is that every scanlation and every fanfic (which are all probably based of the same scanlations) says "crow." Not "raven." "Crow."

Maybe the kanji are the same or something? I don't know. But that was big enough to irk me.

However, not nearly so bad as it would have if Nii hadn't said "take off the clothes for daddy." I just giggled at that.

So glad you found a copy!

Yeah, I was curious about that too. I think it might just be because they felt the symbolism of "creepy bird" might go better with a raven for English-speaking audiences. Though really, I'd think either would work; with ravens you've got "nevermore", but a group of crows is a "murder", so they're both good.

Thanks! I'm glad too.

Ah, the word for "crow" and the word for "raven" are exactly the same (pronounced karasu). So it was up to the translators to decide which black bird they wanted to use.

Really? That's so interesting. To be truthful, I kind of like the crow symbolism better, since they seem a bit more, I don't know, seedy, which seems to fit Nii, but I do understand why a translator might choose ravens.

Are either bird native to Japan? It seems strange that they'd share a name if so.
