I'm on the wireless at Panera Bread (is that a nationwide chain? I can't remember. It's a cafe/bakery/soups&salads type place), and they are blocking my sites. 'Adult/Mature Content', they say. Not livejournal, obviously, but the webcomics I read are all getting blocked.

I've never had a free wireless block me before; this sucks. How am I supposed to amuse myself while I procrastinate on what I'm actually supposed to be doing? Well, I could always post to livejournal.

How annoying. I'll have to remember not to come here when I want wireless.

Did you see the theme for next month on [livejournal.com profile] fst? Fanfic soundtracks! This is terribly tempting, because I have a playlist for nearly every one of my fics, but I think it might be too self-obsessed to do your own fic.

Well, you can always cheat and give the songs to someone else to post. So then it won't seem so self-obsessed. XD

*laughs* True, I suppose, but I'd still know. It'd be my secret shame.

Well, considering that the author is most likely the person who knows his or her story the best, I don't see why it would be considered too self-obsessed. It all depends on the presentation, really. In any case, I find it a lot more interesting to see the author's take on the musical aspect of a fic than someone else's -- I think it adds to the experience of reading the story.

YMMV, of course. If you want to do it, do it. I'm tempted too, but my fics are way too short.

True. And I won't be surprised if most of the soundtracks posted in November are by the author. I think my real problem is that the playlist of mine that I like the best is Clubsoka's, which a) has so little actually written for it that I'd feel a bit silly posting it to [livejournal.com profile] fst, and b) has each song linked to a specific chapter, and I'd been planning on posting the mp3s along with each chapter, when/if I finish it.

I'd like to see some of yours, though! You have great music.

Hee. Rana made me the icon.

Yeah, most of my soundtracks I made before I actually wrote the fic. I tend to do it that way so I have something to listen to while I'm writing, but going through and picking out songs to include also tends to help me think of how I want the story to feel.

Maybe it's just me and my proprietary attitude toward music, but I just don't see how someone not involved in some way in the production of a story might be able to come up with an entire soundtrack for it. One or two songs, yes, but not a whole soundtrack.

Which is weird, given how invested I am in reader interpretation.

And this is so not a challenge I needed to see. I have too many fannish demands on my time already. Gah.

Hmmm. I agree with you for shorter fics- say, anything that's typical one-shot length or less- but for the longer, multi-chapter or novella fics, I think there'd be enough there for a reader to come up with a soundtrack.

*laughs* And I know what you mean. Not November! That's Nano month.

Actually, I'd think it would be easier to come up with a soundtrack for a short piece as a reader than a long piece, but we all know my brain is wired...differently.

I never do Nano, but I see how that could be a problem for other people.

Oh, sure, go and say that so now I have to do it.

Free wireless that blocks your sites? SUCK! Who are they to decide that? Grr...

And I don't think it's self absorbed at all; in fact, it sound like fun. I'd definitely want to know what music the author pictured with the piece. ♥

Heh, well. I guess since they are offering it for free and all, I can't really complain.

I'll think about it. I might do it; I'm not sure yet.
