Whew. Spending so long without TV or internet or even newspapers obviously was the signal for the entire world to explode.
But I'm back, despite a confusion over dates that ended up with me moving into the dorms mere hours after I got off the plane from California. I feel like I've missed so much. I have missed so much, but as there's no real chance that I'll ever catch up, I'm starting new from right now. Except, you know, for when I inevitably get bored and start to fill time by reading back through people's entries.
So, um. Hi all! Tell me what's happened.

Date: 2005-09-20 05:00 pm (UTC)It's been quieter than you might think. I put it down to that thing where the world exploded, leaving a large percentage of us staring with a kind of uncomprehending horror while the full magnitude of That Idiot's incompetence was exposed to the world. -- But no, I'm wrong. The full magnitude of his incompetence probably hasn't been exposed; with every passing day the picture gets uglier, so that I no longer have confidence that we've seen the worst.
Really, you picked an excellent time to be out of reach of any news.
Me? I figured out LJ tags. And I watched all of Full Metal Alchemist -- want some .avis?

It was terribly frustrating, though. I literally couldn't get a hold of so much as a newspaper- there's a whole story about that, actually- so all I heard was third-hand accounts of half-remembered news reports. I never knew what was true and what was rumor.
And then I get back, and it turned out that it was all true.
I've glanced through the first manga volume of Fullmetal Alchemist while in a bookstore and happened to catch one or two episodes late at night on Adult Swim, but I wasn't particularly hooked. Should I try again?

Date: 2005-09-21 03:57 am (UTC)It's not like anything else in the anime universe I've encountered -- it's extremely novelistic, and the crack quotient is relatively low (although not, of course, entirely absent). And I'm not even saying anything else, because, remarkably for me, it was so cool that I refused to look at anything that might be even a minor spoiler for it once I'd started, so that every fresh bit of strangeness would come at me out of nowhere. All I will say is, I've been burning .avi disks for everybody I know who has a computer that can read them.
For me at least, it's definitely more of an art thing than a fan thing, at least so far. I watched it while I was fighting with the yaoi_challenge story, and never felt that disquieting urge to leave the set of characters I was with to write about the shiny new set. But it's still too damned good not to pimp.
It must have been frustrating to have the news so completely unavailable; but it must have been interesting, too, in a kind of time-traveller way. It's an experience that's so difficult to have in the contemporary developed world that it's hard to even imagine; and yet, it used to be the way the world was, routinely, and not all that long ago in historical time.

Date: 2005-09-22 08:23 pm (UTC)I continually wish that any of the series I follow would get picked up by it. Sure, I'd then have to endure the countless new fans who couldn't be bothered to watch/read any version other than the English dub, but at least I'd be able to pick up merchandise for the series simply by going to the nearest mall.
I have heard a lot of good things about FMA; I'd like to see it. So, if you don't mind buring another couple disks, I'd be happy to see it. Maybe we could do a trade.

Date: 2005-09-23 01:21 am (UTC)Does your computer have any preference as between DVD-R and DVD+R disks? I found out that some people's computers can be cranky about that the hard way, and I've learned to ask. I've got both flavors, if yours is one of the picky ones.
I don't mind about the fans, but I'm deeply puzzled at why the English dubs are invariably so bad. The Japanese voice acting is splendid, the scripts are certainly good enough to give the dub actors everything they should need to work with, so why the trainwreck quality? You can't even put it down to a horrible accident affecting a given series: it seems to be a given across the entire form.

Date: 2005-09-20 07:04 pm (UTC)Also, I am freaking out about going into my final year of my degree, must register, and have no timetable for my English lectures. So very not amused.
And I figured out how to finally do a LJ layout. Go me.

And a lovely layout it is! Very nice.
