Whew. Spending so long without TV or internet or even newspapers obviously was the signal for the entire world to explode.

But I'm back, despite a confusion over dates that ended up with me moving into the dorms mere hours after I got off the plane from California. I feel like I've missed so much. I have missed so much, but as there's no real chance that I'll ever catch up, I'm starting new from right now. Except, you know, for when I inevitably get bored and start to fill time by reading back through people's entries.

So, um. Hi all! Tell me what's happened.

Welcome back! We missed you.

It's been quieter than you might think. I put it down to that thing where the world exploded, leaving a large percentage of us staring with a kind of uncomprehending horror while the full magnitude of That Idiot's incompetence was exposed to the world. -- But no, I'm wrong. The full magnitude of his incompetence probably hasn't been exposed; with every passing day the picture gets uglier, so that I no longer have confidence that we've seen the worst.

Really, you picked an excellent time to be out of reach of any news.

Me? I figured out LJ tags. And I watched all of Full Metal Alchemist -- want some .avis?

My book's coming out in two weeks, and "USA Today" called it one of fall's ten best memoirs.

Also, I am back doing karate (after the car crash way back last July caused lingering problems) although I still have to see a physical therapist at times.

I had my fic almost finished based on the Tsusoka FST you and [livejournal.com profile] yasminm did a while back. Then my sister screwed up the computer and it died, and the only copy I had left was a print-out of the first half that was pathetically out of date. :(

Also, I am freaking out about going into my final year of my degree, must register, and have no timetable for my English lectures. So very not amused.

And I figured out how to finally do a LJ layout. Go me.

Moved to Boston. Got a job filled with nice people that doesn't pay much or give me enough hours. Moved to a nice apartment in a fairly respectable neighborhood. Am interviewing for jobs, hope to get a good 'un.

Big internal investigation going on at work, may be forced to move although I followed proper procedures. Have choice to either tell the truth and piss off my family or lie and get in more trouble.

Have things on eBay that I need to sell, but no one is buying them, only watching them. >.<'

Turned 24. My life at 24 is officially sucking ass. :)

Pimped YnM like it was my job (the DVD set is on a huge sale at Deep Discount DVD, I will give you the URL if you need it). Began initial stages of pimping Weiss Kreuz like it was my other job. Check [livejournal.com profile] yaoi_challenge and [livejournal.com profile] fuda_100 for details. Plans for fandom domination proceeding apace.

You know, the usual.

Thanks!

Really, you picked an excellent time to be out of reach of any news.

It was terribly frustrating, though. I literally couldn't get a hold of so much as a newspaper- there's a whole story about that, actually- so all I heard was third-hand accounts of half-remembered news reports. I never knew what was true and what was rumor.

And then I get back, and it turned out that it was all true.

I've glanced through the first manga volume of Fullmetal Alchemist while in a bookstore and happened to catch one or two episodes late at night on Adult Swim, but I wasn't particularly hooked. Should I try again?

Congratulations! That's great news! I am, of course, planning on buying it the second it appears in bookstores, announcing the entire time: "I know the author".

And congratulations on the karate, too; I remember that you were so eager to get back to it.

Oh, honey, that sucks. I hate it when I lose work; I've done it a few times and it's made me horribly paranoid. I tend to back things up three or four times now.

Things will be fine, I'm sure. I'm freaking out about graduating and deadlines too, currently. But nothing ever seems to be as bad as it could be.

And a lovely layout it is! Very nice.

But it is your job: I need as many new fans as possible, so that they will write new things for me to read.

(Alas, I bought the DVDs over a year ago, when I paid for one what I heard all four are now going for. Dammit.)

If you take over fandom, I can be a minion, right? I promise to write fic!

If what's on Adult Swim is the English dub, then no. No. You don't want that in your brain. I know because of my horrified repulsion when I accidentally encountered the English-language version of episode 5. The fansubs, though, that's a different story. As for the manga, I haven't gotten to it yet myself, but [livejournal.com profile] coffee_and_ink told me that starting with the anime's definitely the way to go.

It's not like anything else in the anime universe I've encountered -- it's extremely novelistic, and the crack quotient is relatively low (although not, of course, entirely absent). And I'm not even saying anything else, because, remarkably for me, it was so cool that I refused to look at anything that might be even a minor spoiler for it once I'd started, so that every fresh bit of strangeness would come at me out of nowhere. All I will say is, I've been burning .avi disks for everybody I know who has a computer that can read them.

For me at least, it's definitely more of an art thing than a fan thing, at least so far. I watched it while I was fighting with the yaoi_challenge story, and never felt that disquieting urge to leave the set of characters I was with to write about the shiny new set. But it's still too damned good not to pimp.

It must have been frustrating to have the news so completely unavailable; but it must have been interesting, too, in a kind of time-traveller way. It's an experience that's so difficult to have in the contemporary developed world that it's hard to even imagine; and yet, it used to be the way the world was, routinely, and not all that long ago in historical time.

Yep, English dub. Adult Swim is on late at night on- I forget what channel at the moment, but it's either Cartoon Network or the Comedy Channel. I put it on now and then to play as background noise when I'm doing things that late at night and there's nothing else on TV.

I continually wish that any of the series I follow would get picked up by it. Sure, I'd then have to endure the countless new fans who couldn't be bothered to watch/read any version other than the English dub, but at least I'd be able to pick up merchandise for the series simply by going to the nearest mall.

I have heard a lot of good things about FMA; I'd like to see it. So, if you don't mind buring another couple disks, I'd be happy to see it. Maybe we could do a trade.

I so don't mind. Just let me know what the mailing address should be -- I assume you'll have moved since last year? -- and I'll put a set in the mail.

Does your computer have any preference as between DVD-R and DVD+R disks? I found out that some people's computers can be cranky about that the hard way, and I've learned to ask. I've got both flavors, if yours is one of the picky ones.

I don't mind about the fans, but I'm deeply puzzled at why the English dubs are invariably so bad. The Japanese voice acting is splendid, the scripts are certainly good enough to give the dub actors everything they should need to work with, so why the trainwreck quality? You can't even put it down to a horrible accident affecting a given series: it seems to be a given across the entire form.
