brigdh: (everyday in heaven)

I've been putting together this playlist for quite a while now, and I think I'm finally happy with it. I even made a cover! All of the files are .mp3s, except for the last, which is a .m4a. They're uploaded to my own server instead of ysi, so just right-click-save. And then leave me comments, because you love me. Yes.

I wanted to make a playlist for summer, songs for heat and humidity and those long, long hours of sunshine that seem to stretch forever. This is for listening to when you're stuck in traffic and the air conditioning is broken, but you're feeling too lazy to care, you've got one arm out the window and a foot up on the dashboard. For playing in the background while you sit on the porch and watch the trees rustle. For naps in a hammock with cool breezes starting in the red light of sunset. It's less about the lyrics than the sound: slow, quiet, and content.

01 - Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix - Summertime (Live at Woodstock)
One of these mornings / You're going to rise up singing
This is my favorite song. Nothing compares. Summertime is an old folk song, and it's been covered by just about every artist you could name (I have versions ranging from operatic to trip-hop), but this version is so lovely, the rough guitar and Janis's soaring voice and the crowd in the background. This was the inspiration for the rest of the playlist.

02 - Nick Drake - Pink Moon
Pink moon is on it's way
I have no idea what this song is supposed to be about. But isn't it pretty? And so sing-along-able.

03 - Sufjan Stevens - To Be Alone With You
I'd give my body to be back again
This was a lucky find I made on [livejournal.com profile] teh_music just about a week ago, but it fits too perfectly to be believed. A gorgeous song.

...rereading the lyrics, possibly it's a song about Jesus. Um. It works better if you pretend it's just an ordinary love song.

04 - Kings of Convenience - Gold in the Air of Summer
It's a good thing that you came along with me
Another [livejournal.com profile] teh_music song. Chosen both because I like the theme of driving and traveling, which is echoed in a few of the other songs, and for its understated happiness.

05 - Death Cab for Cutie - A Movie-script Ending (Acoustic)
When I awoke I was on the onset of a later stage / the headlights are beacons on the highway
See? More cars. My favorite part of this song is its simplicity, the easy strumming of the guitar and the singer's unornamented voice.

06 - Bob Dylan - House of the Rising Sun
And it's been the ruin of many a poor girl / And me, oh God, I'm one
I've loved this song ever since I was little, though like most people, I know the Animals' version best. Dylan's isn't my favorite cover, but it's the one that fits the playlist. House of the Rising Sun also was originally a folk song, and he sings an older version of it than the one more commonly used. Knowing that doesn't make it any less funny when he describes himself as a poor girl.

07 - Dirty Vegas - Days Go By (Acoustic)
You are still a whisper on my lips / A feeling at my fingertips / That's pulling at my skin
You wouldn't think any version of this electronic dance song would fit in with the rest of the playlist. And yet, it's so sad and sweet that it works.

08 - Neutral Milk Hotel - My Dreamgirl Don't Exist (Live)
And the wait is waiting up / To build a world so real and strong
The really hard part of choosing this song was having to narrow it down to just one NMH song. I ended up with this one because it's fairly unknown, it's very simple- just the main singer and his giutar- and, depressing as they are, I absolutely adore the lyrics.

09 - The Killers - Smile Like You Mean It (Acoustic)
Looking back at sunsets on the Eastside / We lost track of the time
I love the Killers. This is a wonderful version of one of my favorite songs of theirs, which can't quite decide if it's happy or sad.

10 - Jack Johnson - She's Only Happy in the Sun
But if the sun sets you free / You'll be free indeed
Sunshine is a beautiful, beautiful thing. And I suppose I needed to include a few songs that actually had some connection to summer.

11 - Damien Rice - Cannonball/Hallelujah
The minor fall and the major lift / The baffled king composing hallelujah
I know this song has a blip in the middle of it. But I can't find another copy of it, and I love it too much not to include it. If it really bothers anyone, I can provide different versions of either Cannonball or Hallelujah, but not both in one.

12 - Bif Naked - Lucky (Acoustic)
What could I say to you, except "I love you" / And "I'd give my life for yours"
I love this song so very, very much. The original version, which is sort of rock-ish, is on the first Buffy soundtrack, and it's been my favorite love song for years. When I heard there was an acoustic version available, I spent a week trying to get a copy of the damn thing. But it's worth it.

13 - Bush - Wild Horses (Live)
Let's do some living after we die
Another song where most of the effort was in finding the right cover version. I like the crowd in the background; it feels appropriate.

14 - Ohia - Captain Badass
We get no second chance in this life
Found on [livejournal.com profile] fst. Despite the name, this is a lovely song that I could listen to endlessly.

15 - Ben Gibbard - Recycled Air (Acoustic)
I watch the patchwork farms' slow fade into the ocean's open arms
This song is also about traveling, though in a plane instead of a car. Regardless, it's sweet and hopeful.

16 - Rilo Kiley - I Love LA
When the palm trees bow their heads / No matter how cruel I've been / L.A., you always let me back in
I found this song on some music blog, and what a find. A wonderful summertime homecoming song.

17 - Ani DiFranco - Do Re Me (Live)
If you ain't got that do re me, boy / If you ain't got the do re me / You better go back to your beautiful Texas / Oklahoma, Kansas, Georgia, Tennessee
Apparently I also have a California theme going on, though I didn't intend to do that. I got this song from [livejournal.com profile] coffee_and_ink a while ago. This is probably the most upbeat song on the playlist- at least in terms of melody if not lyrics- and I love to sing along with it.

18 - Iron & Wine - Such Great Heights
And when you scan the radio / I hope this song will guide you home
One of the earliest songs on the playlist, this is so, so lovely. The Postal Service's version is very good too, but I really adore the softness of Iron & Wine's.

19 - Coldplay - I Bloom Blaum
Well honey, I sing about you
Coldplay is so good. This song is a non-album track, but I first got it several years ago, and I've loved it since then.

20 - Juana Molina - Isabel
Sorry, no lyrics. I don't speak Spanish, and google isn't bringing up any transcripts of this song. Off of Urban Outfitter's Good Music for UNICEF Tsunami Relief Fund CD- which has many, many good songs- this was a great find. It's perfect for an ending song, because it has a gradual fade to silence.

This was the inspiration for the rest of the playlist.

When you said you made a summer playlist, this was the song that came into my head.

You should get "Summertime" by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, "Island In the Sun" by Weezer, "Bali Ha'i" by Peggy Lee, "Last Nite" by the Strokes, "Blue Hawaii" by Elvis, "San Francisco" by Me First and the Gimme Gimmies, "Mr. Blue Sky" by Electric Light Orchestra, and "Warmth of the Sand" by Dashboard Confessional.

Ha, I'm more ecclectic than you are.

For some reason the Kings of Convenience song shows up as Postal Service - "Recycled Air" for me.

Eh, screw it. Don't know why I'm responding to this anyway.
