Disturbed? Delighted?

My mom is reading a Poppy Z. Brite book. Not even current Poppy, with the happy restaurant-owning New Orleanians. No, this is old school Poppy, with the haunted houses and vampires and blood and violence and gore and goths and clubs and drugs and sex and cursing and gayness.

I have no idea how this could have happened.

Well, okay. I maybe have a little idea, since I was there at the time. And since the whole thing's sort of my fault. I was trying to read, and she was teasing me, saying I found books more interesting than her. Obviously, I needed some way to make her shut up so I could finish the chapter. So I gave her something to read herself. The Poppy book happened to be in my backpack, I figured she'd read a page, not like it, and go away.

She's now halfway through it.

This is so disturbing. She's my mom! This is Poppy Z. Brite! She's not supposed to like cool stuff!

I always felt weird whenever my mom read something I would read (Anne Rice, usually) or liked music I liked (Folk Implosian was particuarly rough). Yeah, it's creepy.

*nods* I know what you mean. It's just kinda weird. Plus, I'm not exactly happy with my mom being aware of them... ahem, adult content of some of the things I read. And Brite's not exactly known for being subtle.

But hey, Folk Impolisan! I love their 'My Ritual' song.
