Apparently Barbara Hambly has a new Ben January short story coming out very soon! :D Here's her summary: "HAGAR is another tale of what Rose does while Benjamin's out of town (in this case, while Benjamin is off in Washington during GOOD MAN FRIDAY). Rose has occasion to go sleuthing with Hannibal and with Ben's mother Livia."

OMG WANT.

eeeeeee! \o/ I was hoping she'd do more Ben January shorts sometime soon.

I still wish she'd do some slice-of-life stuff about Team January when they're not solving mysteries, though. I would totally read ALL the shorts about an ordinary evening in the January household, or Olympe's family, or any one of the supporting cast being made to babysit Baby John (I NOMINATE SHAW, even though the plot shenanigans required to actually make that plausible would be dire), or ... well, basically anything.

... which hopefully does not sound ungrateful, because YAY MORE BEN JANUARY.

I know, me too! I suppose she might think there's not much audience for plotless stories like that, but I would love it! My favorite parts of the books are always the character interactions, and not the mystery.

And I totally want to see Shaw babysit too! It would be so silly and ridiculous and it makes me grin just to think about it.

Yeah, I think it's probably that she feels the stories need to be proper stories with a plot (and proper mystery stories, at that) but I would totally pay for a whole book of side snippets that's just the characters having domestic downtime and little ordinary-person adventures around New Orleans. :D

... Shaw babysitting would be GOLD. And such crack. But also gold. The funny thing is, I think he'd actually be fairly good at it; he had younger brothers and sisters, and grew up in a time/place where older siblings probably would be expected to help out with the little ones. Still can't imagine a sequence of events (at least a likely sequence of events) that would involve him ending up with the baby, though.
