Game of Thrones

OH MAN ARE WE GOING TO HAVE A GREY WORM/MISSANDEI ROMANCE SUBPLOT? I am here for that! YES WE ARE I AM SHIPPING THIS SO HARD.

Whereas the Theon and Ramsay scenes are becoming my least favorite part of the show. Which is odd, because I loved Theon's ADWD plotline (in a "I love painful tragic angst" sort of way, of course). But on the show I'm starting to want to just fast-forward through them.

Ah, this Littlefinger and Sansa trial-esque scene was FANTASTIC. Tensions, secrets revealed, lies! Dude, wow. It's amazing that recounting things we already know could be so dramatic. Though what is up with her evil!Raven dress in her later scene?

Mmm, I don't think I like how the Jorah storyline played out. Dany is angry, yes, but she doesn't seem hurt at all. This is supposed to be one of the foundational betrayals of her life, a betrayal foretold by prophecy; it's not just anyone spying on her. I would have wanted angsty Dany dramatic shots, rather than angsty Jorah dramatic shots. (Okay, part of that is because I have no sympathy for Jorah in this, but just in general I feel like there was nowhere near enough attention paid to Dany's pain.)

I don't know how I feel about Tyrion's beetle story. I like the central metaphor of it, I suppose, but it was so loud and so... weird. I did like the callback to Jamie killing that what's-his-name Lannister with the "what kind of killing doesn't have a name?"/"Cousins."

OH MY GOD THAT WAS SO GROSS. Is that how Oberyn died in the book? I don't remember the eye thing.

Penny Dreadful

Man, I love Frankenstein's new monster SO MUCH. I love that he calls Frankenstein "demon" - it's such a neat reversal of the usual dynamics. I love all the gender-roleplay with references to birth and bearing and children. It goes along really well with the original novel, though it's an aspect that gets dropped from most adaptations. And I LOVE that he's called Caliban. That symbolism works so much better for me than the original Caliban, actually; I like an actually-created creature thinking "you have taught me language, and my profit on it is, I know how to curse" more than a slave doing so.

Welp, that's an orgy. I like that this version of Dorian Grey is just going there.

If I ever was curious about the details on sex on consumption, this show is more than providing the visuals. She's even Irish!

OH NO KITTY. HE FED A CAT TO THE VAMPIRE.

Dorian/Ethan! I... was totally assuming that would stay subtext. But I approve! And I will approve moreso if Vanessa/Mina is a thing, as the trailer for next week seemed to suggest.

So, I watched both those shows back to back with two people who had read the books and one who hadn't, and Hadn't Read the Books Guy's reaction was THE BEST.

Yes, it is in the books, but maybe not quite so graphic? I had to close my eyes. I do remember that his skull was crushed and Tyrion threw up, so probably not too far off.

And then they all got to hear me, as we watched "Penny Dreadful," bitch, "Man, they should just kiss already. This is what's wrong with TV, you have to write fic to get the Dorian Gray/Chandler slash OH MY GOD."

(Silence falls.)

Me and two female viewers: "THIS IS THE GREATEST SHOW IN THE HISTORY OF TELEVISION."

Toby was so sad that Oberyn died. I'd gathered that he was likely to, from comments I'd run across earlier, but hadn't said anything other than "Well, it's George R. R. Martin: we can't be sure he survives!" every time Toby mentioned it in the past two weeks. :)

Yeah, I had to close my eyes too! And gore normally never bothers me, but this was just so gross.

Ha! Yeah, my thoughts were "Wow, this show is getting pretty explicit about its subtext... OH."

I'll direct you to this Fanfare thread at Metafilter (http://fanfare.metafilter.com/129/Game-of-Thrones-The-Mountain-and-the-Viper) for discussion of the beetle thing, and a couple of good interpretations. Alas, the thread is 300+ comments and I read them yesterday, and I'm attempting to get actual work done today, so I'm not diving back into there in order to point out the relevant comments (but I expect ctrl-F for "beetle" will point to them).

Yes, me too. They are so adorable!

Ah, man, I liked Oberyn! I knew he would be around long, but still, what a gruesome way to go. On the other hand, he did get the Mountain to confess to raping and killing Elia on Tywin's orders, so there is that.

if Vanessa/Mina is a thing

...I might have to check out Penny Dreadful, between that and Eva Green and Victorian mash-up of supernatural creatures. (Has Carmilla shown up yet?)

Yeah, I would have loved for Oberyn to be a longer-lasting character. Alas. I do like all the other Dornish characters who will be introduced next season.

And unfortunately he didn't quite manage it- the Mountain confessed to raping and killing Elia, but not Tywin's involvement (or lack of).

Oops, and forgot to mention: you should totally watch Penny Dreadful! There's only 8 episodes in a season, so it's not much of a commitment. Though no Carmilla yet.

We're getting more Dorne? Awesome! I'm liking Dorne a lot so far from what we've seen.

I think I'll wait until the season over to watch it. There isn't that much longer to wait and lately I'm trying not to get into shows that don't have at least a good (complete) first season.

Yup! I don't know if you follow behind-the-scenes news for the show at all, but they've been holding casting calls and announcing confirmed actors for a lot of next season's Dornish characters for the last week or two.

That's probably a good choice. I like the drawn-out-ness of watching one episode a week, but I know a lot of people prefer to marathon shows.
