Fandom snowflake!

Day 12: In your own space, talk about what you think the future holds for fandom. What are your hopes and dreams for fandom? Do you have any predictions about what the next five years holds for fandom?

I don't anything particularly interesting to say for today's challenge, unfortunately. The thing about the future is that it's always unpredictable. Who knew that a website based around looking at photos of your Harvard classmates or posting no more than a short sentence at a time would become incredibly popular? But then Facebook happened, and then Twitter happened. I have no idea what the next big thing will be.

I hope it's something I like! I continue to be a grumpy old fogey and refuse to get a tumblr, even though there are several tumblrs I check daily. My twitter account lasted about a month before I got bored and stopped using it. I'm still very fond of LJ and its format, even though it's slowed down somewhat.

For me personally, I think fandom will continue to be where I spend too much of my free time. I probably will continue in tiny fandoms, as that seems to be my fate, from where I gaze upon big fandoms' fic, with their kudoses in the double digits, and curse. But as long as I have canons to enjoy, stories to write, and at least a few people to squee with, I will be happy.

If you're not on Dreamwidth yet, it's a lot like LJ - built from the same open-source frame. There's a pretty active community of writers (and poets, and bunches of other things). I still read LJ but most of my journalling takes place on DW these days. (Also, hi!) :)

I do have a Dreamwidth, I've just sort of... abandoned it. But I really should get crossposting set up, so I can use LJ and DW together!

Amen!

Yeah, me too.

Speaking of which, is there much French in the Benjamin January series? I've just started (one chapter) and Ben's been called "Janvier" and I have a very weird relation to French in English texts.

Yay! There's not much French; it mostly comes up in names and place names- so occasionally you'll even get "Monsieur Janvier" or "Mademoiselle Janvier", depending on who's talking (and similarly, he's occasionally addressed as "Senor Enero" or "Herr Januar", when he speaks to people in Spanish or German), and places like "Rue Royale" or "Bayou Chien Mort". There's occasional phrases that come up in French ("sang mêlé" and "gens de couleur libre" are by far the most common, and I assume are used rather than the English equivalents because of a tradition of those names in New Orleans), and now and then there will be a quote from a French source, but there's never entire dialogues, or even whole sentences, in French.

Not that much French, and (nitpick nitpick) what there is tends to be pretty bad (e. g. Hambly sometimes spells "gens de couleur libres" as "gens du couleur libré"). There IS a lot of untranslated Greek and Latin, though!

Two chapters now. This is a detective story in which Hannibal lounges a lot, right?

That's good to know. I asked because I'm French and when January was called Janvier, I didn't realise until a page and a half later, when my brain went "Wait, January has a y in it and she called him by a name that didn't have a squiggly under it, WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?" which can get really annoying if it happens a lot, since each time throws you out of the story.

Ha, yes. Hannibal is occasionally more helpful (usually when Ben forces him to take a role), but his default function is to either provide gossip or be in danger, from which Ben must rescue him.

Yeah, I can see how being French would make random French use in texts very distracting! I think the name switches are mostly there to indicate "this conversation is happening in French", since many of the characters speak more French than English.

Yeah, I use Tumblr quite a bit but Twitter is just too much energy.

Oh, I didn't know you had a tumblr! What's your screenname there, if you don't mind sharing?

Course not! I'm riceflavor. 90% of the time it's just me reblogging pretty pictures and Brooklyn 9-9 gifs.

Awesome! Animals photos and funny gifs are mostly what I like to look at on tumblr, so it works out!
