Fandom! Snowflake!

Day 10: In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

Totally stealing some ideas from other people for this...

-Fanwork based on my fanworks. Write sequels, draw art, anything! I would be touched and very pleased.

-Fanwork- art, fic, icons, mixes, anything- for my poor tiny Benjamin January fandom. I can only reread the seven fics in existence so many times, you guys.

-Book recommendations! My to-be-read list is already unbelievably epic, but everyone should always feel free to comment or email when they come across something you think I might like. I adore reading the "Canon Recs" threads on ffa, for instance, even if I don't always comment to them, because I like to keep an eye out for future fannish goodness.

Book Recommendations: I feel obligated to immediately mention Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie. HOLY SHIT THIS BOOK! It's the kind of sci-fi I love and it's really smart. Sentient space ship on a revenge quest! Said ship is the PoV character and the non-humanness is done SO WELL. Diverse future space human cultures! Language fuckery with pronouns! I could go on about this book for ages but it's hands down my favorite book out of all the ones I read last year.

Oh, I also want to mention the AZTEC FANTASY MURDER MYSTERY trilogy called Obsidian and Blood, by Aliette de Bodard. The first one is called Servant of the Underworld. I'm about to fall asleep so I can't write up a blurb so well but I wanted to mention it before I forgot.

Do you use goodreads or a similar site? I'm always curious about your reading list since you've got so much interesting stuff on it.

OH MAN THAT SOUNDS AWESOME. Thank you for the rec!

I have a goodreads account (as Brigdh) but I haven't been updating it. My to-be-read list is mostly just a hypothetical that exists at the back of my mind.

booooooooooooooooooooks.

- i'm under impression that you've read elemental logic and therefore don't need to be recced it, am i right?

- (skipping stuff from my bookmeme :D)

- here comes the messiah! (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/417567.Here_Comes_the_Messiah_) by dina rubina, a fierce, hilarious, tragic book about soviet/russian emigrants in jerusalem. i can't answer for the quality of translations, but in russian it one of the most impressive contemporary russian books.

- the foundling (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32111.The_Foundling) by georgette heyer - did me and chilla ever sang you a panegirik for this book? it's more of a buildingsroman than a romance book, it's hilarious and so sweet and kinda like fantasy and has the best. hero. everrrrrr.

- chime (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8299165-chime) by franny billingsley - beautiful, haunting story with perfect unreliable narrator. and sisterly relationship, and magic of stories.

- martha wells y/n? martha wells is my happy place, more specifics on demand :D

I have read the Foundling! But I should reread it, it's been a while.

Here Comes the Messiah! and Chime sound really good, and though I haven't read Elemental Logic, I have a copy of it and am meaning to get to it soon. I somehow have read nothing by Martha Wells- what's a good one to start with?

oooh, martha wells. she does: 1) feel-good books - you know, comfortable fantasy? 2) cool worldbuilding; 3) somehow matriarchal setups; 4) f/m pairings with intersting dynamics; 5) occasionally awesome matriarchal antropomorphic shapeshifting lizards.

if you're ready for lizards, start with the raksura series - such hurt/comfort, very wow! about a shapeshifter who's lost his entire people, doesn't know his history or origins, and hides among "groundling" (kinda humanoid) people feeling sad and alienated and occasionally persecuted with pitchforks. and then he's found by his true people, and finds out that he's a prospective consort to the queen(s), and there's a loooot of getting used to not being alone, and politicking, and hugs, and some grandiose fighting of enemies, and ALL THE THINGS and these books are my favorites forever, okay.

if you want to start somehow more antropomorphic, lle-rien books are steampunky (and the prequel is pure fantasy) in a mostly european sense, and wheel of the infinity is a SUPER-cool tibetan-based fantasy. with a badass older ex-warrior-priest heroine.

(also, btw, remember max gladstone? the second book is set in a quasy-aztec city, and the worldbuilding is just DELICIOUS and amazing. i was mostly meh about relationships in this book, but the writing is gorgeous and plot unfolded well. and super-awesome lesbian sidekick/best-friend to the hero).
