Reading Wednesday
Nov. 13th, 2013 01:59 pmWhat did you just finish?
Between the Assassinations by Aravind Adiga. A book of short stories all set in a fictional small town in Karnataka, south India. The "assassinations" referred to in the title are of the Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi (in 1984) and Rajiv Gandhi (in 1991), which doesn't really have anything to do with the stories, except to set them in a specific time and political climate. The stories are well-written (I liked this book much better than the other one by Adiga I've read, White Tiger), but ultimately they all felt a little... incomplete. None of the stories really went anywhere; no one changed or made any large decisions or discoveries. They just showed a little piece of their life, and then the story ended in pretty much the same place as it began. I liked reading them, but I kept wanting something more.
Busy week; that was the only book I finished!
What are you currently reading?
Mirror Dance by Lois McMaster Bujold. STILL SO GOOD.
The Thing about Thugs by Tabish Khair. A novel set in London and Bihar in the 1830s; there are resurrection men and phrenologists and opium dens and beheadings and conflicting narratives and basically everything awesome.
