1. Not with a Bang - Alec, Swordspoint, PG-13. By me! I posted this story last night, but you know, time zones. Anyway, I wrote something! This is deeply and terribly exciting to me, in sad way. So you should comment.

I was rereading my old Swordpoint stories the other day, because clearly that is a productive use of time, and I noticed that I'm often quite vague about when any particular story is set. This despite the fact that, of course, I have quite specific times in mind when I'm writing. It's because I think I'm 'subtle'. Anyway, to correct that, I actually gave a clear setting this time, in the notes and all! Go me. These are the things I'm working on this week, because otherwise I have to try and understand quantum physics (I AM NOT EVEN EXAGGERATING I AM LITERALLY READING A 400 PAGE BOOK ON HOW X-RAYS ARE FORMED AT A SUBATOMIC LEVEL AND ELECTRON SPIN AND OH GOD KILL ME NOW). So they're probably going to kick me out. And then I have to move to the inner city and live with a swordsman? I think that is my life already. My point here*, though, is that the prompt was from 'Heart of Darkness', which is a book that I hate, partly because I've had to read it four or five time- Heart of Darkness being one of those books that every literature class ever has to assign- and partly because I just hate it. However, those multiple readings did mean I now get what it's doing, at least, and I do not hate it quite as much as I did the first time I read it. I still think it's racist, though, which lead to a disagreement with a professor in my undergrad and then he gave me a C on the paper because he said I clearly wasn't reading deeply enough. Not that I'm holding a grudge.

Anyway, none of that has absolutely anything to do with my story. On to the next link!

2. A bunch of art that the Nazis described as 'degenerate' and dumped in a cellar has been uncovered in an archaeological dig, and is back on display: photos here. Really neat.

3. The 50s Housewife Experiment - this is a very cool blog. She decides to try actually living like a 50s housewife- including cooking from 50s cookbooks, taking 50s beauty tips, cleaning based on 50s household advice books, and so on- to see what it's like, and then blogging about it. Also funny!

4. FCKh8: Straight Talk about Gay Marriage (NSFW) I love this video so much.

*Okay, clearly I have no point and am rambling, but bear with me.

There are lots of Swordspoint stories! I will first be selfish and just link to my own, which can be found here: Brigdh's fic (http://wordsofastory.livejournal.com/176436.html) (scroll down a bit for Swordspoint).

However, because I'm obsessive, I also maintain a list of all Swordspoint fanfiction that has ever been written- well, and posted to the internet. It's a bit out of date at the moment, but I'm planning of fixing that tonight and tomorrow. Swordspoint fandom (http://community.livejournal.com/_riverside/13177.html).

The books are lovely to reread, so I hope you find some stories you enjoy!

There are! Writing Swordspoint stories is how [livejournal.com profile] wordsofastory and I met and hooked up (hence, her life already... Several of my swords live in our bedroom)

I don't think you're nearly batshit enough to be Alec.

I am most definitely not, nor is Racheline a border-line psychopathic killer, but you know. I still think it's funny.

This is true, but the first time we met in person, a strange, STRANGE man get getting into our space in a bar, and eventually I offered to show [livejournal.com profile] wordsofastory how to kill him with a steak knife and then he asked if he'd be real if we stabbed him, JUST LIKE IN THE BOOK, which croggled us beyond all.

That is the weirdest yet coolest shit ever. Except for the part where a weird guy was bugging you.

Life is often so bafflingly circular.

I think [livejournal.com profile] wordsofastory posted about the evening in here somewhere, or I did -- I can't remember. It was super bizarre and is worth us telling the story sometime when my Internet is less fucking Swiss.

Here is the post of that night (http://wordsofastory.livejournal.com/267211.html), if you're interested, but it's pretty long. It was also the first time [livejournal.com profile] rm and I met in person, which feel really adds to the story.

I have never read Heart of Darkness! I guess I haven't taken much Lit though.

Ugh, do not. That and 'Things Fall Apart' are the ones I've been assigned the most often, and while I don't really like 'Things Fall Apart' either, at least it is just boring and not offensive.

I had to read "Things Fall Apart" for an African & African American Literature class, so I guess that was my lit. I took one English course, a Classics class, and a couple of history classes, and I think that's as close as I came to having to study literature.

I know I had them both in high school and college classes, but I can't remember specifics. Because I have a really bad memory! I think I was only required to take two English classes in college, but I took several others (or ones that were close enough, like comp lit or folklore), that I kept having to deal with these same books.

I actually like it, but only had to read it once. And it's definitely a portrait of a time and mindset rather than a history lesson, lolz.

Kind of like reading Rudyard Kipling, eh?

Yeeeeees. I am sort of boggled that people say 'no, it's not a racist book!' Um. It is soaking in it. Conrad does cool things with English and tries to blame the Europeans for a lot of the problems but omg man of his time.

I love how thrilled the kids in the FCKh8 video are to be saying 'fuck,' lolz. And the "I'm straight! ...okay, I'm not."

And #2 is amazing.
