1. Victory of Eagles (the new Temeraire book): awesome awesome awesome so far. Has Temeraire ever narrated chapters before? I don't remember. But I adore his voice.

2. Saiyuki Reload 8: also awesome. The official releases have finally caught up to the point where I stopped following the scans- out of laziness- which means this was new to me. I quite enjoyed it, although I probably missed any interesting meta by months.

3. Is anyone else reading Joe Abercrombie's trilogy (The Blade Itself, Before They Are Hanged, and the last one isn't out yet, at least in the US)? Because I adore it: epic fantasy with all the standard tropes- Conan-type Barbarians, ancient wizards, talented young swordsmen- but done self-aware and cynical and gritty and funny and brilliant. The misanthropic, crippled ex-war hero turned torturer is my favorite character. Someone squee with me, or else go read them yourself.

4. I'll also recommend Empress by Karen Miller, also part of a trilogy (the other two books are not yet out in the US, though I think they might be in Australia). Set in a very vaguely ancient Mespotamia-type world, with colored characters, and a really interesting (even if a lot of reviewers seem to find her not very sympathetic) female main character, Hekat. She is, in fact, kind of a sociopath, I agree, but I adored her, even if I wouldn't particularly want to meet her. I suppose the title already spoils part of the plot, so I can say the book focuses on her rise from an unnamed slave to leader of the kingdom, with the political machinations, violence, and religious manipulation that would involve.

1. Nope. I'm pretty sure Lawrence was the only PoV char. before. Temeraire is made of awesome.

I must read Temeraire books. They're on my wish list for ages! Silly finances. >8(
Also, Empress looks promising! I still suffer from lack of female lead characters (that were not Anne Shirley) in books from my childhood. Where were Tamora Pierce books when I needed them? Bring on the sociopath! :D

zomg! The Blade Itself! I love, love, love it. Glokta is by far the best character in the story but I also adore Jezel, selfish twit that he is. And Logan has grown on me. I love his "well, a man has got to be realistic" philosophy. Abercrombie's characters' inner dialogue is amazing and awesome and yay yay, yay!

I did order The Last Argument of Kings from Amazon and it came, so I assume it's out.

If you go on Amazon you can order the Gollancz paperback, which is, I think, the British publisher, but hey, it shipped to me. The other paperback published by Pyr is up for pre-order.

1. Yay! And yay again, I say! I am also reading Victory of Eagles, and I quite agree with you on Temeraire's chapters. I'm about 40 pages into Part II, but I don't want to spoil since I don't know where you are in the book. I suspect this may be the last book in the series, but I don't know for sure. Any ideas?

Really? I haven't finished it (I'm a bit further along than you, unless I suppose you've read more since you wrote this comment), and it hasn't felt particularly like an ending book to me yet. But then, it's hard to say until you get to the end, I suppose. I hope not! I'd like more Temeraire books.

No, I haven't read more since I commented, but I want to!! It is sitting in my bag staring at me, beckoning, "Come to me... Come to me..." :) :) :)

But I agree - I would miss Temeraire terribly if this was the end. :( Interestingly, this is the first book in the series I've read - I listened to all the others on CD (unabridged). I love the narrator - he's perfect for these books!
