Heh, I'm really in the same position. But I figure getting some things to compare will help me make a choice. Or I suppose I could just start crossposting to everything!
I like that attitude a lot, but I'm not sure I want to continue giving LJ my money and support in these circumstances. Regardless though, I'll certainly continue to read and comment on LJ posts!
At this point I'm likely sticking with LJ, but I do keep journals on all those other services-- and my GJ and IJ actually get used (and I read from their flists) because I have friends on them that don't use LJ.
I have accounts at IJ and GJ, though it's very likely that I'll move my personal LJ permanently to Scribblit (http://community.livejournal.com/scribblit/) when that goes live, while my fic journal's migrating to Wordpress (http://www.buhangin.com/qithathu/) (which also doubles as my fanfic site).
I won't be deleting my LJ because a good chunk of my flist is staying and I'd love to keep up with them, but the thought of giving LJ more of my money makes me ill.
I got some info from my f-list that Insane Journal is adult-fic friendly. It's also cheap, has tags(!) unlike journalfen, and seems to be popular. At the moment, I seem to be posting to everything using Semagic.
I have an account with InsaneJournal, which I will be using to keep tabs on people going there. I currently only have one friend moving to GreatestJournal, and I live with her, so I'm not making an account there yet, although if enough people move there too, I'll get an account there using weirdquark as well.
Other than that, I'm staying put, although once my paid account expires I'm not giving LJ any more money. I"m not worried about getting TOSd even though recently I remembered that I have written one fic when one person was underaged, I wrote it like four years ago and the only way LJ would know it existed would be if I reported it myself because I'd bet no one else remembers it exists.
Like everybody else, I'll be following the progress of Scribblit, and I have an account at JF under the same username as the one here; but I think that for the time being at least, I'm going to follow Rana's lead and make IJ the home base. I'm not going to leave LJ completely (for one thing, there's the metafandom gig, and for another, I'm paid up here through next June); but any new fic is going to be there and not here, and I'm already making posts over there that aren't mirrored here.
I chose IJ because (i) I like the owner's attitude and responsiveness; (ii) the shiny newness of the culture over there is attractive (GJ is said to have entrenched cultural norms); and (iii) people who seemed to know what they were talking about said that of the LJ clone sites available, IJ seemed to have the most up-to-date coding, which struck me as a good sign for the future.
... have managed to typo my own name up there... GJ is the same as LJ. my JF has been there for years, just use it for F_W. am not yet abandoning my LJ. sorry for weird sentences, keyboard still borked...
Got GJ and IJ journals, but I'm not moving house. I'm building up separate flists in order keep up with everyone, so for the moment there will only be additions, not subtractions.
f) I have already moved to Insanejournal, where my name is the same. *G*
While I actually suspect mine would be one of the last fannish LJs to go, because it's flocked and my interests aren't really all that exciting if you don't know the fandoms in question, I just have issues continuing my fannish activities on a site that won't tell me if they're gunning for me or not. I also have very little patience for shitty customer service, which is what we've been getting, and I frankly don't appreciate any corporation trying to circumscribe my fannish experience, no matter how objectionable I may or may not find the material they're axing.
I'll keep a journal here for commenting and tracking purposes, until such time as the bulk of my part of fandom has migrated, and my pro journal remains here because the pro writing community is heavily based here, but I'm contemplating moving that journal, as well, and I'm not planning to give 6A any more money. I think they've robbed us all enough.
I'm active on IJ now, but still hanging out on LJ because (a) I haven't managed to recreate all my feeds on IJ yet and (b) some people haven't moved (yet?).
I have journals on IJ, GJ and JF, at the moment I'm crossposting between LJ and IJ. I've also set up a mirror on IJ of a comm I have on here. Out of the bunch I think IJ's probably the best alternative to LJ and if I jump ship permanently that will be where I'll go.
I'm crossposting at IJ and GJ, and plan on weaning myself off LJ's fannish and anime/manga infrastructure. Where I end up is dependent on where my f-list goes, and what happens to the parts of fandom I hang out in. Currently, IJ looks more attractive than GJ, but I haven't done much poking around. I doubt I'd get ToS'ed off LJ, but I don't like how LJ's handled things.
Not particulary about to move, since the other options don't seem to have anything up on LJ aside from the obvious 'well at least we're not doing /that/ (yet)'. I dunno. I -- I suppose I accept that a lot of things will turn out shit, but hey, you can still get along okay most of the time. Keep your head down, make sure your stuff's backed up, go about your business. Also I dislike having to take a stand about /anything/ unless it's absolutely necessary.
I'm quite enjoying poking around the different sites for a change, though.
That's much the way I feel. I don't think there's any chance I myself will be deleted, but I don't like supporting a company that creates such an environment for fandom. I agree that much of fandom exists in a grey area of legality, but I'd rather go back to being hidden in invite-only maillists or print zines than send money to a company that might delete your journal without warning.
Hee, yeah. I'm not worried about being banned, really, but I don't like giving money to LJ under these circumstances and a lot of my flist has started to move of their own accord.
Maintaining the flist does seem to be the hardest part of the move. The main reason I did this poll was to see if there was any sort of consensus yet, at least among my flist.
Yeah, I see what you mean. I, personally, have no worries about being deleted, but I don't like the environment it creates, and I really don't like giving money to LJ under the circumstances.
You have a JF account? I haven't even gotten one yet!
I'm attracted to IJ mainly because it seems like most of the people I know are going there, but I haven't yet had time to set up as the things I should- transferring the backlogs, and making the sorts of backups I need to. I really should get around to that soon.
I wonder how we can get a count of everyone who is no longer giving LJ money as a result of this whole thing -- be it a reaction to the porn policy or the customer service, or whatever. Because then we could calculate how much money LJ is losing.
I think fanfic/fanart is sort of like jaywalking. It is illegal, but most of the time no one's going to bother you about it.
You can get a JF account by requesting one over on leavin_eljay, where they've been responding almost instantly. I still haven't set mine up, or done anything with it beyond making sure it's there in case I need it for metafandom purposes.
I'm still interested in Scribblit. But I also have to say that there's something to be said for management that's excited to have us because we're a vibrant edge community, but isn't actually a part of that community. There's that much less potential for messy-divorce kinds of emotional issues down the road.
The ijournal client works with InsaneJournal. All you need to do is add a new setting that says "www.insanejournal.com" instead of "www.livejournal.com" and you're good to go. Unlike Semagic, it won't post simultaneously to all your accounts, but it will log you into any LJ-type account and let you re-post to each journal.
I'm sure a decent coder could modify xjournal to do the same thing -- it must use roughly the same login protocol, there's just nowhere for a user to switch the basic setting to another server -- but sadly, that coder is not me.
Still thinking on it. Most of the people I have friended here aren't in fandom, but at the same time, I'm irritated enough to want to go. As it stands, I have journals on JF, IJ, and GJ - all the same name as this one. OY.
I just mentioned to someone about something else entirely that I try not to dwell in negative places. 6A has made LJ a negative place, where you just don't know what's acceptable and what isn't. I won't be comfortable here until and unless LJ leaves 6A's hands. And even then, I've never seen the responsiveness from LJ's PTB that I've seen from Squeaky on IJ, nor is the format as tailored to our usage as the proposed project on fandom_flies will be.
That does make sense, and I think is a very good response to the situation. I'm maintaining hope for the fandom_flies project too, though I think it'll be a while before it's really completely functional.
Oh, I know. I've just been a bit lazy to make the effort of getting an invitation, particularly since I've yet to do much set-up on the sites I already have accounts on. Besides, I don't know anyone who's decided to move to JF as their primary account.
There's that much less potential for messy-divorce kinds of emotional issues down the road.
Ah, now that's a good point, and one I hadn't even thought of.
Oh, I think it'll definitely be some time until that project is up and running, and I'm good with that. It's a big undertaking, and we want to know it's functional. In the meantime, I'm used to the format of this type of interaction, so IJ's a good place for me.
Same here. Of course, even before all this happened, I never seriously entertained the thought. This is but one platform, like mailing lists, and I know it'll be left behind when the next great technology comes along. If I was using it as my own website/fic archive, it'd be worth it to me to spend the money, but I have a separate website with my stuff on it, so this is really just for the interaction.
