Episodes Two and Three of Romeo X Juliet are now available, though they're still in that strange .mkv format. If anyone finds other versions/some way to play those files on a mac, let me know so I can link to it.

I'm finding myself actually terribly fond of this anime. I expected to, because Romeo and Juliet is my favorite of all of Shakespeare's plays*, but it's a play that lends itself to reinterpretations as a cheesy love story, and there's certainly no shortage of overly dramatic, star-crossed lovers in anime. Though neither of the main characters have struck me as particularly interesting yet (they're both rather vapid and shy, actually, though Juliet is pretty cool while she's crossdressing as the new version of Robin Hood), I'm waiting to make a final judgment on them, because the things the anime is doing to the structure of the story are just so neat. There's a million layers of meta going on here, and I can't wait to see where it all leads. If you haven't been watching this anime, I recommend that you download it and start.

I love that Shakespeare himself is a character in the anime, but in truth, I didn't find it that new of an idea; I assumed you'd see him as a background character now and then, and at the end of the series, he would decide to write a play based on what he'd witnessed. It's been done before; there's a variant on it in Shakespeare in Love, for example. But no! That does not seem to be where Gonzo is going. I love the way other Shakespeare plays are getting woven into this story: characters have quoted Twelfth Night and Richard III, and at a party of the Montagues, someone mentioned "that rich commoner, Shylock". In the second episode, the speech Shakespeare gave Juliet about love, where he quoted one of his own plays, and then commented, "but that's only in stories, not real life"- oh my god! How many levels of meta is that? An anime based on a play where the original author is a character, talking to another character who is his own fictional creation that she should worry about love in real life, not stories... that is awesome. I adore it; I squeed while watching that scene.

I also get excited every time Mercutio comes on screen, because he's my favorite character. Unfortunately, he seems like he's going to be very different here than in the play. I predict he's going to turn out to be a sleazy, Machiavellian character who betrays Romeo's relationship with Juliet to the Duke. Though I suppose it's pretty hard to tell, considering he's only had about four lines so far.

But the things I'm really interested in are the big changes, the way the story's been drastically altered from the play to the anime. One I'm very interested in is how the tone of the rivalry between the Montagues and Capulets has been fundamentally altered. In the play, it comes off as very petty- by which I mean not that it's not important, or that there aren't terrible consequences for the people involved, but that it seems to have no real cause. There isn't a 'right' side and a 'wrong' side; there's just two groups of squabbling children. But in the anime, 'right' and 'wrong' have been drawn very clearly, and the meaning of the tension has been heightened. Here it's not just a rivalry, it's a revenge that people have devoted their lives to, it's a war. Not only has Juliet's entire family been murdered horribly, but the Montagues are keeping the populace poor and frightened and unhappy, etc, etc. The Duke is almost a caricature of the evil villain (I also predict that that extreme depiction is being done on purpose, and there will be some interesting revelation later in the series). It's not something that can be healed by the families being combined in the marriage of their children, because whether the Montagues or the Capulets are in charge has serious, meaningful consequences for the entire city. It puts Romeo and Juliet in a much different position than the play does; Juliet has real reason to resent Romeo, and she's being asked to give up much more than her name if she marries him. Romeo, too, will have to deal with a different set of decisions, once he finds out what's going on. I'm curious to see if the anime will keep this clear Evil versus Good dichotomy that it currently has, or if we'll find out something about one family or the other to complicate it. Either way, I'm really interested in the choice Gonzo made to do this. It changes the tone of the story in such a fundamental way.

I also think that Juliet has spent so much time in hiding, under different names, is neat, considering that one of the big choices she has to make in the play is 'what's in a name?' She's only been a Capulet for a week, so she's changed to become a member of the family, not changing out of it to marry Romeo.

I'm really enjoying this series. I'm so pleased that it's being subbed at such a quick speed, because I'd hate to have to wait any longer.

*I'm going to see a ballet version of it tomorrow, eeee!

I'd watch this if I could find this in any format besides mkv, which doesn't work on my computer and I don't have any desire to download the ton of extra stuff you have to do to apparently make it work.

What amuses me greatly about this is what they seem to be setting up with Tybalt. He appears in flames in the trailer and his design's up on the main site. From the looks of it they're going for a very anime tack with him, having him be the hellbent lost heir obsessed with revenge. He's got duel ninja swords. He's wearing all black. O, King of Cats, you are badass now.

If you're running Windows, you can play it on Windows Media Player just by downloading this codex (http://www.cccp-project.net/), which I finally figured out by much trial and error. I'm so irritated that they chose this format instead of something simpler, particularly since apparently it won't play on macs at all; why on earth would you deliberately exclude a large portion of your audience? I'm sure it will turn up in a different format eventually, but for now it's really annoying.

Tybalt hasn't shown up in the anime yet, though I can't wait for his arrival, since I also adore his character. A Tybalt/Mercutio hatesex story would pretty much be the best thing ever, and I can't believe no one has written it. Though hey, if I did it myself, I could probably actually sell it, as I'm sure Shakespeare has been dead for way too long to still have copyright.

But I can't imagine this Romeo killing a kickass ninja. Maybe they'll change that plot point.

Oh, okay so what did you think of the friar in the anime? I'm working through the play again, but it is inbetween school and such, so I'm not going as quickly as I would like. Do you think they were implying in episode 3 that he was the one who tattled?
Like I have said before, I'm sad that it is looking like there will not be a plague in this version, but it could still be possible. Also I love the fact that the old Capulets are dead and gone. I never liked the we get together at the end and hug, so this makes it impossible and is much more up my alley.

I'm a little wary of the series right now, since the first episode left me kind of iffy (Who the heck is Hermione? Wasn't Romeo's other love interest Rosalyn?).

I think I've got to accept that this is an entirely different story that the original, that's just borrowed the names and a couple of themes. (Which is pretty much what their "7 Samurai" adaptation did.) I'm just hoping it doesn't turn out to be another plain old adventure series and actually deals with some of the heavier drama of the original.

Tybalt sounds awfully promising though. ;)

I didn't get much of an impression of him, he was on for such a short scene. That would certainly be a really interesting change if he was the one giving away secrets! He seemed like a much more cuddly, friendly kind of guy than I usually picture the priest, but if he's tattling, that would be very different.

I'm really wondering how the end while go. The obvious answer if Juliet will become ruler of the city, but I wonder if things will be that simple.

Rosaline, but yeah, not Hermione. Also, Romeo wasn't engaged to Rosaline, but he did like her in the play, so they're setting him up in a very different position.

I haven't seen '7 Samurai', though I've heard good things about it. But yes, this adaptation almost seems to be changing more things than it kept. I think it got better after the first episode, or at least I liked the next two more. But then, I'm pretty predisposed to like any adaptation of the play, or at least give it much more benefit of the doubt, than perhaps someone else would be.

I can't wait for Tybalt to show up.

Yeah I just got a strange vibe from him. I think it is funny that the wife tells him and then the guard magically appears, bumping into him again. It just seems like an unnecessary seen to show if it wasn't him.

From the opening I don't know if there will be a city left for Juliet to take over.

Yep. I'm sure we'll see more of him soon, which will make things clearer. I'm expecting episode four to show up any day now; it's already out in raws, so we just have to wait for the subs.

Ah, true. That would certainly be a different ending.

Yeah, it's so exciting!! I didn't catch it, but other people commented on (http://oyceter.livejournal.com/585552.html?thread=5047376#t5047376) how the gender dynamics are flipped too -- Juliet barging in on the Montague ball, as opposed to the opposite way around.

I do find Juliet to be a bit of a wet rag when she's not out Robin-Hood-ing, but I'm hoping that she will get angst galore!

I've heard of this anime; will probably download it now! TY for links.

Okay, you're the ONLY YNM person on my flist, so I'm hoping you have a copy of the choir song that plays over the sinking of the ship in the Eileen arc. Right? RIGHT? If you do have a copy, can I please steal it off you? *hopeful*

Oh, I hadn't thought of that! I did notice Romeo standing on a balcony after the ball, and wondering if we'd see a reversed version of that.

Hee, yes. I'm really looking forward to see how the characters will develop.

Hmm. I do think I have it, but it's on a CD that I won't be able to get to for about two weeks. You could try asking on [livejournal.com profile] yami_no_matsuei or [livejournal.com profile] anime_downloads, if you need it sooner.

I am interested in getting into this anime - which sub do you recommend? ^^

I believe there's only one sub (Umai) out so far, which is the one I linked, though you can also get it off bit-torrent here (http://depthstrike.com/~umai/). It's really new- they're only about one episode ahead of us in Japan- so there's not a lot of different subs yet.
