Ah, the secret to that is: start saying "happy holidays" just before Thanksgiving, and carry on until January (though, indeed, figuring out when to stop is a bit harder). Despite it once resulting in my getting shouted at by some guy who felt I was promoting a anti-Christian, ultra-PC agenda, I continue to recommend it to everyone; there's so many holidays in that timespan that it's never not appropriate!
But knowing how to bone a duck is probably a lot more useful than LJ birthday protocol, and possibly even more so than regular holiday behavior, since the best thing to do is to avoid all etiquette-necessary encounters and hide out with like-minded people.
