Mardi Gras is next week! It seems like it's very late this year, but maybe that's just because last year's was so early.
I've always wanted to go to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, ever since I first heard about it. It's become a joke in a lot of things: I don't care about sports, so my default team is whoever's from New Orleans, and thus I have several pieces of Saints clothing that I got as presents. I get mardi gras beads as presents all the time, and hang them up in my room. When the hurricane hit this summer, I was in Nevada, but when I managed to get back into cellphone range, I found that I had voicemail messages from three or four people asking if I'd heard what had happened to New Orleans, OMG.
Obviously I'm not going this year either, as I have classes that week and no one to go with, but I'm happy they're having it. I still want to go someday.
On a related topic, I also have nothing to do for spring break this year. Which is mostly my fault for not planning ahead, but still depressing. About a week ago, in the onslaught of emails I get related to school things, I noticed one about a reconstruction trip to New Orleans over spring break. I immediately emailed them back, because who cares if I would have had to work: New Orleans! For free! Over spring break!
But all I got back from them was that all the places had already been filled. That was the entire email: "All the places have been filled". You'd have thought if they were going to break my heart that they could have at least added a "hi" or "thanks for asking anyway".
