An Awfully Deep Well (Sandman, PG-13) Vignettes of each of the Endless in change. Lovely language, and so true to the canon. "Living things always fight me, as if I am a thing to be fought. As if I am unchangeable, bearing down upon them, unavoidable, implacable. You have a choice. You always had a choice."

Secret Lives of the Cast of Galaxy Quest (Galaxy Quest, G. Snapshots of each of the main characters, this is funny and sad and feels totally true. An excellent story, and I really enjoyed reading it, even though I've almost forgotten the movie.

Clangs His Funeral Bell (Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, PG) Stephen and the gentleman with thistledown hair, and man, it should not be possible for anything to be this creepy while saying so little. "Lady Pole was promenading with a gentleman made entirely of blackberry canes, who was nonetheless impeccably dressed in cloth of rich brown, with a smart black ribbon in his queue. They moved quite gaily; Lady Pole's step was light, almost skipping as the piper called the mournful tune, and she showed no particular sign of distress at the brambly hand that clasped hers, though Stephen could see that thorns had pierced her, leaving vivid carnelian spots on her white glove."

The Language of Birds (Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell/The Once and Future King crossover, R) The idea of this story is *genius*, and the telling of it is lovely and perfect. I am really insanely fond of this, because it works in a way that ties both canons together logically and just works so well. And it's very hot, in a totally wrong, special-hell sort of way.

Cleopatra's Needle (Addams Family, PG) Backstory for Morticia and Gomez, this story is so dark and pretty.

Hyakinthos (Greek Mythology, G) Apollo and Artemis, and oh my god, this reads exactly like some bit of lost poetry.
"--what sin can limit?
I'll tell you why I kissed him. I will not beg for your acquittal.
What would you know of kisses?"

The Unexpected Affair of The Injured Detective (Sherlock Holmes, PG) The other Holmes stories this year are also excellent, but this one is so sweet and tender that I'm most fond of it.

Wedding Bells (Penny Arcade, PG-13) This story is exactly as on-crack as the comic, and I love it for that. So totally funny.

Stardust (The Iliad, PG) Achilles and Patroclus, with some of the most gorgeous language I've read yet. Heartbreaking ending, of course, but it's so very good.

Of Mice and Myth (The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul, G) Mice don't believe in gods. A hilarious story, with a surprisngly touching middle section.

My hands remember hers (Deadwood, R) Jane and Joanie on Christmas, and it should not be possible for a story with this much swearing to be this sweet. Lovely.

Screenwriter's Blues (Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, NC-17) This is genius, and so, so right, in a way that's totally and completely wrong. If you saw the movie, you must read this. "You wonder why Toyota never mentions in their ad copy that the Camry can hold at least a half-dozen quality exotic dancers.
"Word of mouth has a certain panache," Fritz explains."
