brigdh: (I torture my characters)

I put on the Kyoto Arc of YnM last night to transcribe a scene for [livejournal.com profile] threewalls, and let it run for a few minutes as I was finishing up afterwards.

Which, of course, meant that I watched the entire thing. But Hisoka starts being so angsty and confused! And Tatsumi and Tsuzuki get all sad and nostalgic ! And poor, broken, drunk Tsuzuki. And the self-destruction! And the so don't cry anymore! And it's snowing, and the narrow, dirty alley, and they're holding hands!

I am never going to get tired of this fandom. It's kind of pitiful, actually.

Though in my defense, I'd never watched it all the way through with the English actors before. Dr. Satomi's voice is so bad. And Oriya's hurts me. They're all bad, actually, but at least I'd heard the others' before, so I was used to them. I got to be newly horrified by Oriya's.

I think I've figured out what's up with Muraki's voice, though. The actor is trying to sound like Hannibal Lector. Seriously, listen to it with that in mind. Doesn't it sound like a bad imitation of Hannibal? Every now and then, it actually works for a few lines, but usually it just takes a wrong turn at pretentious and nasally.

The change in Hisoka's speech in Touda's fire still frustrates me, though. Stupid translators.

Oh, I think you're right!

What change?

Hisoka throws himself in Tsuzuki's arms and says, "I want you to exist, even if it's just for me. I don't want to be left alone!" And the next line should be "Here is where I belong" or "This is the only place I've ever belonged"- I'm willing to allow changes in translation, as long as the basic idea is conveyed.

But no. The next line is Tsuzuki's. He thinks, "That's a little selfish now, isn't it, Hisoka?"

And then Hisoka says, "Just here, in your heart" which *doesn't make any sense without the intervining line about belonging*.

ARGH. I hate it. It changes the interpretation of the scene entirely. And I don't think Tsuzuki would think that, and even if it later occurred to him, I certainly don't think he would think that in the heat of the moment.

And- and- SO MUCH HATE. SO MUCH. WHY DO YOU HAVE TO ADD IN RANDOM LINES, TRANSLATORS? I use my angry icon at you.

It's only in the English audio version, obviously, as in the Japanese you would notice that it was Hisoka's voice, not Tsuzuki's.

Yeah, I never watched the dub for that scene. They throw in random lines to match the sync. But it would be nice if they threw in random lines that, you know, made any sense.

But it's not even to match the sync! Because Hisoka's the one talking, though granted, you can't see his mouth because it's hidden behind Tsuzuki's shoulder.

It's like some random person at Central Park decided that, hey, Hisoka really should have let Tsuzuki kill himself, and added lines to the show to prove his point.

LOL

But the english is still fun for a laugh.

And either language, the Kyoto-Hisoka-speech really pisses me off...

XD

Yeah, I'm not entirely happy with either translation, but at least the subtitles didn't add in anything blatantly wrong.

This is why I never watch anime in English if Japanese with subs is an option. I'd rather have to focus and read the lines than put up with bad voices.

Subtitles don't bother me at all; I read fast enough that I barely notice them. But I know they bug some people, so I try to make allowances when I'm watching anime with others, but... God. These actors are just so bad.

I read pretty fast too, and I've gotten to the point where there are certain Japanese words I just recognize, so I don't even have to look at the subs to know what's being said.

I rarely watch anime with others, but I will probably always vote for the sub option when I do. *G*

*laugh* I like nasally voices good enough, but Muraki's dub just doesn't cut it. Besides, you have Hayami's voice to compare it with. It stands no chance.

That's true too. The Japanese actors are so good that I'd still prefer them even if the English actors didn't outright suck.

Mmmm, pretty voices. ^^

The funny thing about Muraki is that he's actually completely different for the first few scenes in the Nagasaki act. Then it's like the guy playing him suddenly twigged that, wait, this guy was GAY and OMG HE MUST TALK IN A HIGH WHINY VOICE.

I can't watch the dub for any length of time because, while I can cope with most of the voices, Watari's has me clawing my ears out. THAT IS NOT A BRITISH ACCENT. IT WILL NEVER BE A BRITISH ACCENT. HE SOUNDS LIKE HE IS ON CRACK.

... /rant ^_^;;

Bwahaha, really? I don't think I've watched that part; I must go check it out now.

AND OMG, I KNOW, WATARI'S IS SO BAD. It's just so... so... insane. It sounds like a really bad villan from some cheesy kids' show.
