Saiyuki! Oh, yes, ma'am. *G* Also, Farscape, if you haven't seen it yet. For movies, let me delve into the distant past and recommend (in case you missed any of these and they're available) The Last Starfighter, Labyrinth, Ladyhawke, and Lost Boys.
Evil Dead 1, 2 Army of Darkness Shaun of the Dead Bubba Ho-Tep Inuyasha Zatoichi series- older, Japanese series about a blind swordsman. Than man moves SO fast. It's cool.
I've seen one or two episodes of Slayers; they happened to show it one of the few nights I actually went to my university's anime club. But I'd love to see more of it.
You have to read V. 4 so I won't worry about spoiling you so much. The anime's pretty terrible but it's fun to watch the stuff you've read animated anyway.
Well, the first season of the anime is apparently awful on the animation front, but I'm told it gets better. And the storyline and characters are just...yeah. So much good. And if you need the rest of the manga, let me know. I've got the scans.
Lost Boys is quintessential '80s teen horror. SoCal vampires, dude. *G* Ladyhawke is a gorgeous medieval fairy tale with an over-synthesized soundtrack, but again, '80s. The Last Starfighter is a cult classic, and more modern sf movies and television shows rip it off than you'd think given its current obscurity.
Yes, yes. It's just that I like to save my manga for times when reading an actual book would be too awkward: on the bus, or while standing in line. Otherwise I go through them way too quickly.
Donnie Darko Italian Job House of Flying Daggers (which probably isn't available yet...?) Hero Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Benny & Joon Newsies Empire Records Ocean's Eleven and Ocean's Twelve (for the heck of it. =D)
Yes, Saiyuki! Except the art in the anime is ... well ... I never thought anyone could make Sanzo look unattractive. *weeps*.
And Gravitation, because it's more subtle than crack and has boykissing. And Samurai X Director's Cut. Do you want to be my Netflix Friend on my Netflix Friend's List or whatever it's called? *g*
Oo, I've seen a lot of these, but they're all good choices. I <3 Hero in particular so very, very much. I own the DVD for that, actually! But I haven't seen Boon & Joon, Newsies or Empire Records, so I'll have to look those up. ^^
Raise the Red Lantern, an early film by Zhang Yimou, the director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers, and very different from them: in rural China, a poor girl becomes a rich man's fourth wife and has to deal with the household politics. It is acute and painful and visually the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen.
Orlando - adaptation of the Woolf novel; tremendous fun.
Henry V - Branagh version, not Olivier.
Anything by Orson Welles.
Lilo & Stitch.
Orfee and La Belle et le Bete, if you like fairy tale imagery.
I'm actually very much a newbie to anime fandoms. YnM is the only series that I've seen in whole. I've seen/read bits and pieces of Utena, Fruits Basket, Gravitation, Saiyuki, X/1999, Petshop of Horrors, Fake, +Anima, and Prince of Tennis, but that's it. There's a few others I know quite a few things about, just from hearing enough people discuss them in my presence, but those are the only ones I've actually seen.
Um, nope. I haven't seen many 80s movies at all, and they always tend to come up in conversation with the express purpose of leaving me with nothing to say. *grins*
I want to see Raise the Red Lantern so badly. It was one of the first movies I looked up when I joined the site, but Netflix doesn't seem to have a copy of it. I'm distraught. Is it possible it just hasn't officially come out on DVD is the US yet?
And oh, thanks for the other recs. Lilo & Stitch is the only one I've seen already.
I have seen the Bill and Ted movies! Look- I'm not completely culturally ignorant. *grins*
Ferris Bueller I suppose I should see at some point. It was one of my best friend's favorite movies for the longest time, but we don't have much the taste in movies, so I never watched it.
Oh, you've got to see Ferris Bueller. It's hysterical, and rather ubiquitous in geek culture. That one and Ladyhawke made Matthew Broderick's career.
The other John Hughes movie I recommend is Some Kind of Wonderful. It's pretty standard '80s teen flick fare, but Eric Stoltz is just breathtaking in it, and Elias Koteas is hilarious (the two also co-starred in The Prophecy, which I can't remember if I already recommended or not, but hermaphroditic angels! In black trenchcoats! And Viggo Mortensen as the devil).
The Prophecy! I first watched that movie in the middle of the night with a big group of friends, in that state of tired and silly that almost the same as being drunk. We went around for months afterwards randomly shouting "I love you more than Jesus!" to each other.
*snort* It's a truly cheesetastic movie, but I love it.
Actually, that reminds me, have you seen the original Highlander movie? The creator of The Prophecy is the one who put that together, and as I love Connor MacLeod and detest Duncan, I pimp that movie to anyone who might not have seen it.
I actually haven't seen any of Highlander, movie or TV shows. I really should; it seems like one of those fandoms everyone needs to know at least a little about.
Don't see any of the movies but the first one. For the fandom, it actually seems more useful to be acquainted with the series. I can't abide the main character, but quite a few of the supporting characters are wonderful fun. I have suspicion you'd quite like Methos. *G*
