I just got Netflix! So, you know, rec me stuff. *grins*

Also, I am sick. Wah. I demand chocolate and orange juice.

You've watched Slayers, right? It's old and goofy but I still love it.

Also, I will give you all my virtual orange juice. XD

Saiyuki! Oh, yes, ma'am. *G* Also, Farscape, if you haven't seen it yet. For movies, let me delve into the distant past and recommend (in case you missed any of these and they're available) The Last Starfighter, Labyrinth, Ladyhawke, and Lost Boys.

Evil Dead 1, 2
Army of Darkness
Shaun of the Dead
Bubba Ho-Tep
Inuyasha
Zatoichi series- older, Japanese series about a blind swordsman. Than man moves SO fast. It's cool.

I've seen one or two episodes of Slayers; they happened to show it one of the few nights I actually went to my university's anime club. But I'd love to see more of it.

And yay, orange juice!

Oo, Saiyuki! Have I told you I'm reading the manga? I've finished the first three volumes already. It's nice to hear that the anime's good, too.

The only one of those I've seen is Labyrinth, which I *adore*, so I'll defintely look up the others. *grins*

You have to read V. 4 so I won't worry about spoiling you so much. The anime's pretty terrible but it's fun to watch the stuff you've read animated anyway.

Well, the first season of the anime is apparently awful on the animation front, but I'm told it gets better. And the storyline and characters are just...yeah. So much good. And if you need the rest of the manga, let me know. I've got the scans.

Lost Boys is quintessential '80s teen horror. SoCal vampires, dude. *G* Ladyhawke is a gorgeous medieval fairy tale with an over-synthesized soundtrack, but again, '80s. The Last Starfighter is a cult classic, and more modern sf movies and television shows rip it off than you'd think given its current obscurity.

Yes, yes. It's just that I like to save my manga for times when reading an actual book would be too awkward: on the bus, or while standing in line. Otherwise I go through them way too quickly.

And your icon is fascinating.

Ooo, thanks. The only one out of that I've seen in Shaun of the Dead, which I love, so I'll have to look up the others.

You know, I remember hearing about a Zatoichi movie, but I hadn't known it was a TV series too. Cool!

[livejournal.com profile] telophase made it. She also does killer fanart.

I can never be that restrained with manga. I read it at stoplights on the way home sometimes. XD

I'll sit here and rec movies. XD;;;

Donnie Darko
Italian Job
House of Flying Daggers (which probably isn't available yet...?)
Hero
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Benny & Joon
Newsies
Empire Records
Ocean's Eleven and Ocean's Twelve (for the heck of it. =D)

**Wolf**

Yes, Saiyuki! Except the art in the anime is ... well ... I never thought anyone could make Sanzo look unattractive. *weeps*.

And Gravitation, because it's more subtle than crack and has boykissing. And Samurai X Director's Cut. Do you want to be my Netflix Friend on my Netflix Friend's List or whatever it's called? *g*

Ooo, thank you. I haven't see any of those.

Oo, I've seen a lot of these, but they're all good choices. I <3 Hero in particular so very, very much. I own the DVD for that, actually! But I haven't seen Boon & Joon, Newsies or Empire Records, so I'll have to look those up. ^^

Oh, Gravitation, yes! Someone once sent me the first 6 or so episodes, and I was distraught that I never managed to get a hold of the rest.

And sure, I'd love to be your friend. *grins* Except, um, how do you do that? *is a newbie*

Er, a lot of what I'm going to rec's been posted anyway, so I'm going to rec some crack anime: GTO. Try it, it's fun.

Also, I dunno if you've seen (or want to for that matter) but try seeing the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs. :)

Raise the Red Lantern, an early film by Zhang Yimou, the director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers, and very different from them: in rural China, a poor girl becomes a rich man's fourth wife and has to deal with the household politics. It is acute and painful and visually the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen.

Orlando - adaptation of the Woolf novel; tremendous fun.

Henry V - Branagh version, not Olivier.

Anything by Orson Welles.

Lilo & Stitch.

Orfee and La Belle et le Bete, if you like fairy tale imagery.

Heathers.

Oh, GTO, yes! I've read a few of the manga, and it's such *fun* crack.

And lots of people have told me to watch Kenshin. I will have to do that.

You've seen Legend, yes? Also Fright Night? Seriously, I could keep you supplied with '80s movies recs for years.

Have you seen Mirage of Blaze? :)

You should /definitely/ see Kenshin.

From: [identity profile] wordsofastory.livejournal.com
Nope, haven't seen that one either. ^^;

I'm actually very much a newbie to anime fandoms. YnM is the only series that I've seen in whole. I've seen/read bits and pieces of Utena, Fruits Basket, Gravitation, Saiyuki, X/1999, Petshop of Horrors, Fake, +Anima, and Prince of Tennis, but that's it. There's a few others I know quite a few things about, just from hearing enough people discuss them in my presence, but those are the only ones I've actually seen.

Date: 2005-02-01 08:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wordsofastory.livejournal.com
Um, nope. I haven't seen many 80s movies at all, and they always tend to come up in conversation with the express purpose of leaving me with nothing to say. *grins*

I want to see Raise the Red Lantern so badly. It was one of the first movies I looked up when I joined the site, but Netflix doesn't seem to have a copy of it. I'm distraught. Is it possible it just hasn't officially come out on DVD is the US yet?

And oh, thanks for the other recs. Lilo & Stitch is the only one I've seen already.

Oh, you're right -- it's only available on VHS. That's a terrible shame.

Date: 2005-02-03 07:21 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ranalore.livejournal.com
Well, now you can join in said conversations. *G*

You should probably get Ferris Bueller's Day Off and both Bill and Ted movies too, if you haven't seen them. Fans seem very fond of quoting both.

From: [identity profile] wordsofastory.livejournal.com
I have seen the Bill and Ted movies! Look- I'm not completely culturally ignorant. *grins*

Ferris Bueller I suppose I should see at some point. It was one of my best friend's favorite movies for the longest time, but we don't have much the taste in movies, so I never watched it.

Date: 2005-02-10 03:36 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ranalore.livejournal.com
Oh, you've got to see Ferris Bueller. It's hysterical, and rather ubiquitous in geek culture. That one and Ladyhawke made Matthew Broderick's career.

The other John Hughes movie I recommend is Some Kind of Wonderful. It's pretty standard '80s teen flick fare, but Eric Stoltz is just breathtaking in it, and Elias Koteas is hilarious (the two also co-starred in The Prophecy, which I can't remember if I already recommended or not, but hermaphroditic angels! In black trenchcoats! And Viggo Mortensen as the devil).

From: [identity profile] wordsofastory.livejournal.com
The Prophecy! I first watched that movie in the middle of the night with a big group of friends, in that state of tired and silly that almost the same as being drunk. We went around for months afterwards randomly shouting "I love you more than Jesus!" to each other.

Good times.

From: [identity profile] ranalore.livejournal.com
*snort* It's a truly cheesetastic movie, but I love it.

Actually, that reminds me, have you seen the original Highlander movie? The creator of The Prophecy is the one who put that together, and as I love Connor MacLeod and detest Duncan, I pimp that movie to anyone who might not have seen it.

Date: 2005-02-11 04:59 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] wordsofastory.livejournal.com
I actually haven't seen any of Highlander, movie or TV shows. I really should; it seems like one of those fandoms everyone needs to know at least a little about.

Date: 2005-02-14 12:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ranalore.livejournal.com
Don't see any of the movies but the first one. For the fandom, it actually seems more useful to be acquainted with the series. I can't abide the main character, but quite a few of the supporting characters are wonderful fun. I have suspicion you'd quite like Methos. *G*
