O.o My CD burner just exploded.

I was just sitting here, checking email, and all the sudden it went 'boom'. But it was still making the little humming noise that it does all the time, so I opened it to see what was going on, and the CD that was in there spills out in approximately five million itty-bitty shards.

This is the bizarrest thing ever. It wasn't even running at the time, the only reason it was even on was that I'd been using it this morning and hadn't bothered to unplug it. And dear god, I hope it's just the CD that's broken and not the burner itself, because it cost nearly a hundred dollars. I haven't tried it again yet, because I don't want to lose another CD.

But has anyone ever even heard of this? It seems insane to me.

Seems insane to me too. Why the heck would that happen? I'm mystified.

/me pets you and hopes it's an anomaly.

Thanks. :) I'm hoping it doesn't happen again, it was extremely bizarre. And sorta scary, random booms coming from the computer area.

Oh yeah, Mythbusters (Discovery Channel) did a show on that... it's on their schedule (http://dsc.discovery.com/schedule/episode.jsp?episode=2&cpi=24344&gid=0), but I couldn't find a summary. Basically, they said it's one of those things that happens rarely, but they couldn't really duplicate it without really upping the rpm's. Oh, and they said you weren't too likely to be injured when it happened, because even though the shards are sharp and fly everywhere, the computer itself should contain the explosion.

Hope this helps. ^_^

Well... cool. I never thought there'd be an urban legend about it. I wasn't worried about being injured- it wasn't that big of a boom- but there still seems to be about half of the exploded CD missing inside the burner, which is probably really not a good thing. But, um, neither was hilding it upside down and banging on it in an attempt to get the peices to fall out, so I'm stuck for ideas. ^^;;

Hrm, yeah... I don't really have any ideas about that, short of taking apart the drive and getting out all the pieces. I think I remember them saying that it was probably a fault in the disk that made it break apart in a high-speed drive, so I don't think the drive will destroy all your CDs. Then again, if there are little pieces of CD still in the thing, that can't be good to try to play anything....

*nods* Yeah, that's what I was thinking. But I don't think I can take it apart, there's no obvious screws or anything. Hopefully it'll be okay, because I so do not want to have to buy a new one.

And hey, if you don't mind me asking, how come you friended me? Do I actually know you and just didn't recognize the screenname? I don't mind that you friended me- not at all! Strangers are cool and neat!- I was just curious how you heard of me. ^^;

Let's see... I'm not quite sure how we first ran across each other, since you've been on my other LJ's friend list for quite a while. Maybe something related to Yami no Matsuei? ^^;; Not sure if you missed my post in my old LJ a few weeks back that I would be switching to this account.

Oh, I do know you! Heh. And I'd read the post about the new account and all, it just completely slipped my mind. ^^;;

Sorry 'bout that.

Blimey, I hope your CD burner's OK! I once read in a music magazine many years ago about the possibility of CDs spontaneously combusting, but thought that this was mere anti-CD propaganda on the part of the we-love-our-vinyl-LPs brigade! Never heard of CD's exploding, though....

That's what someone else said, too! So weird. I never heard of this urban legend of exploding CD burnersso of course it happens to me.

Maybe I should start avoiding Pop Rocks and soda...

Is this an external burner, or did your actual laptop just implode? Because if it's an external... when Sephy's first one died a horrible ignominious death way back when, the nice computer people at Office Max informed her that no matter what you did CD burners only had so much of a shelf life. They wear out and die in about a year whether they're expensive or thirty dollars, so you might as well get the cheapest one possible.

Never heard of one actually exploding though. Dude, that takes talent. O.O

External. Which pissed me off, because (at least at the store I went to), the external ones were much more expensive than the internal ones, up to three times as much. But there weren't any internal ones for laptops. >.<

And yes, thank you. My computer is special in this way. If it were alive, it would be one of those dogs with only three legs, one eye, half an ear, fleas and mange, no tail, and doggy AIDS. Which, as far as I know, doesn't even exist, but it would develop just for my computer. Because I'm just lucky enough to get such a very, very special computer.
