So, to follow up on the we're-looking-for-an-apartment post, we have found one! It's in Greenwood Heights, which seems like a nice neighborhood, though I don't know much about it. I'm excited to move to Brooklyn, since I haven't lived there before, and a lot of my friends do.

Hopefully now I will finally, finally, finally catch up with LJ, since I am no longer dealing with looking at apartments/finding brokers/parents in town/teaching all at the same time. It is SO EXCITING to have a weekend where I have enough time to write my lectures for the week ahead, instead of doing them all the night before, I CANNOT EVEN TELL YOU. Which is kind of pathetic? But happy-making!

Anyway, Brooklyn! Does any have any recommendations for restaurants/stores/coffee-shops in the area, or other feelings about it?

Congratulations! I loved living in Brooklyn, although I was closer in than you'll be (Cobble Hill, on the very border of Carroll Gardens, and I still wish I hadn't sold the place, dammit). If you're near an express subway it probably won't feel any more distant from the heart of Manhattan than you feel now, although the mental map of what's near and what's far shifts -- Chinatown seems near, and midtown far, and like that.

I can't give you specific advice; it's been too long since I've lived there. But if you go as far as Atlantic and Court Streets, I can tell you that it's still the promised land there for middle eastern groceries, and Sahadi has the best dried fruit and nuts anywhere in the city. (Ellen and I have been there to listen to the owner instructing his staff not to sell anyone cashews, because the new shipment isn't up to par and not good enough for his customers, just apologize to people and tell them there'll be more in a few days.) And the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library is just across the park from you, and a glorious library in its own right. And I think somewhere in your general area is the collection of fruit stands where I used to be able to find good Seville oranges for marmalade, that were not aged or moldy or anything.

Moving itself is always hell, but this will be so very worth it. I have every confidence that you're going to love it there.

Thanks! I'm excited about it. It'll be on the R (alas, not an express), but I think my daily commute will work out to be about the same as it has been. I would have liked to be in Cobble Hill or Carroll Gardens, but we didn't see anything in our price range in those neighborhoods, unfortunately. Still, we're not far from them!

And ooh, that store sounds amazing. I'm already excited for the Brooklyn Public Library, since I've been disappointed by the New York one (though I'm totally keeping my card, and will just take advantage of both systems).

Thanks again! I'm having lots of fun thinking about decorating, at least, if not so much about the packing/moving part of things.

\o/ I like Greenwood Heights a lot -- it's where my sister lives, and it was one of the neighborhoods I was looking at. There is an excellent Mexican-Japanese place on the corner of 22nd or 23rd and 5th, although I forget its exact name. Aside from that I don't know much about the restaurants -- my sister and I usually end up meeting somewhere in Park Slope, which has restaurants galore.

Awesome! Good to know. And Park Slope is so close; I'm sure I'll be there often as well.
