brigdhI can't believe Milday dies! That is not at all a satisfying ending, Dumas!
And, okay. I mean, clearly, this was the type of book where the good guys win, and evil is vanquished, and so on; I didn't expect anything else. But I'm still strangely dissatisfied at the ending.
I think it's because the good guys are not, in fact, all that good. If Milady kills people, so do they (though certainly the characters and author have way more faith in the code of chivalry making that okay, as long as the other person is a nobleman and armed, than I do); if she switches religions, they're willing to go to war on the Huguenots, despite not having any personal theological objections to them; if she sleeps around, the Musketeers don't have any problems with their own mistresses being married to other people.
I am not actually arguing that she's a good person, or that I would want her running around in real life. But in a novel? She's (in my opinion) far more interesting than the main characters, and much better at what she does, and I still can't believe she dies at the end! Dude!
