"The Jailhouse Job": OMG IT'S AN EPISODE ABOUT THE PRIVATE PRISON SYSTEM I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH. I think the prison industry in the US is one of the absolute worst human rights abuses in the country, but you almost never see it come up in TV or movies or books about similar topics. Even that they would address it, I think is amazing.
Less serious squee: Hardison got Parker a special elevator rig for Christmas! Kielbasa! Sophie's real name! Poor Billy the accountant! Hardison's upper-class British accent (HOT)! Eliot scaring strapped-down Nate! OF COURSE THE PRISON CEO WANTS TO BE A SENATOR OF COURSE HE DOES. He's "tough on crime"! This is so accurate it hurts. The model helicopter! "See, I like this. I like when we pretend to kiss." / "Pretend?" / "Heeeey."
True Detective
So, apparently this is not a True Blood spinoff! I don't know why I was convinced it was, though in my defense, the names, credit sequences, and settings are very similar. True Detective is a very dark, noir-ish, cynical show about a murder in rural Louisiana in 1995, which is perhaps connected another murder in 2012. It's told mostly through flashbacks of the two detectives who investigated it, who are being interviewed by the police investigating the more recent death, as the files were lost in the time in-between.
I've only watched the first episode so far, but I'm liking it. It's a very slow-paced story, with a lot of silences and long takes, but I'm interested in the mysteries set up (not just the murder itself, but a falling-out between the two detectives, their backstories, and the life of the local town).
I don't know how I only watched two episodes of stuff this week! Apparently I just wasn't in a TV mood.
