Yesterday morning I was in a bit of a hurry. I had to print a paper off before I went to class, and I wanted to be in class a little earlier than usual to have more time to work on my final project, so I didn't hang around my room, or sing with the radio, or say "hi" to the janitor like I often do when walking downstairs. I didn't happen to talk to anyone, in fact.

I went to class, and headed into the lab, dropping off my coat and bag by the table, and nodded hello to people. Someone asked me something.

"Hhhhghhhckech *squeak*," I replied. I paused and cleared my throat. "Grgrckcechkkk."

"Uh, why don't you tell me later?" he said. I heard someone else go, "Awwwwww."

"Rgghrgghkckchck!" I protested, which sparked a coughing fit that lasted until I felt I could produce actual English words, and I announced to the room at large (whether or not they understood is debatable, as no one actually responded), "Oh my god, I think I lost my voice!"

Then I cracked up, because I have never lost my voice before and, really, it's hilarious. Or maybe that's the fever. It's bizarre to feel as if you're speaking the same as any other day and yet to hear weird animal noises coming out of your mouth.

And then I went to the emergency room, because not only is my doctor out of town, so is every doctor who works in his office. For the one day I've been sick enough to pay a visit in the last year, because I am the luckiest person ever! Also: sick on finals week! Go me!

At the moment, I'm having a lot of fun communicating with people. Though the drugs I'm on are allowing me to make things other than squeaks and rasping noises, I tend to lose all volume every other second, so I imagine listening to me sounds like watching a teenager's voice break on fast forward. My sentences go like, "I --n't kn--. May-- --er." Anything more than a few words long I have to write down (and then I usually hurl the pad of paper at the nearest person's head, not that I'm getting frustrated or anything).

Wow, livejournal is the greatest thing on the planet right now, though. I can communicate in full sentences! In paragraphs, even! I can express complex ideas without resorting to sign language!
