Title: The Shadow Proves the Sunshine

Notes: Written for ranalore, who needed love.

Tatsumi slips wordlessly into the dojo. He could be just another shadow in the corners of Hisoka's vision: brown coat against the brown wood of the wall. Hisoka pretends not to notice his entrance, preferring the concentration to any conversation. He almost manages to ignore Tatsumi's quiet pride and interest.

Hisoka has claimed that he doesn't know how to dance, but watching him, Tatsumi thinks he must have lied. His steps are graceful, balanced; the black gi sweeps loose around his ankles and the hakama's slipped down to expose his collarbones. His daily practice of violence turned beauty. Tatsumi stares.

When Hisoka stops, his cheeks are flushed and his mouth opens around heavy breaths and his eyes dart, reflexively, to Tatsumi. Tatsumi wipes his fingers against his jacket. He steps forward, shoes sinking into the mat, and Hisoka comes to meet him, hands gripping Tatsumi's sleeves as their mouths close.

By the way, the hakama is the loose pants, and the gi... well, really the gi is the whole outfit, but people sometimes use it to mean just the jacket.)

What is Hisoka practicing, by the way? The only thing I remember canonically is swords.

it still blows me away that you can do that.

You know, I really love drabbles for just that reason: that they *can* capture a single moment in such spare, stark detail. The good ones always make me think of black-and-white gallery photographs. A longer fic, for this metaphor, might be a movie, but damn if there isn't something about those photos that can hit you where you live.

(Thank you. Heh, and here I was so sure that I'd finally gotten it right- I'd taken the idea for this out of some notes I scribbled when I was taking an akido class last year.)

Yeah, swords is the only thing we see him we pratice in canon, so that's what I was thinking of, though there's a little list somewhere in the manga of the other things he's been trained it.
