Setting: A busy sidewalk along HIGH STREET, the edge of campus

Characters: BRIGDH, CUTE LITTLE GIRL, approximately 10 years old, with her hair in pigtails, wearing a neon pink backpack and mary janes. She is holding the hand of what is probably her OLDER BROTHER, a 20-year-old male, listening intently to her with his head tilted. They are indescribably CUTE.

Scene One:

BRIGDH: *follows CUTE LITTLE GIRL and OLDER BROTHER down sidewalk*
BRIGDH: *thinks* They are, actually, indescribably CUTE.
BRIGDH: *happens to walk within hearing range*
CUTE LITTLE GIRL: So, shit, whatever. I'm like fuck y'all, fuck all those fuckers. Right?
OLDER BROTHER: Mmm-hmm.
BRIGDH: ...
BRIGDH: *ded*

Heh.

Reminds me of something I overheard on the streets of Brooklyn Heights some years ago. There's a perfectly-dressed young mother with her equally perfectly dressed daughter, perhaps six years old, holding hands and waiting for the light to change so they can cross the street. Tres Norman Rockwell, except for a certain stiffness about the body language that suggests they're having a fight.

And sure enough, as I sail by them, I catch a few words from the mother, pitched in a low hiss clearly meant not to be overheard: "Don't you dare relate to me like that!"

Ha! I like that story, especially since it's "relate to me" rather than "talk to me". Adds the extra surreality.

It was the "relate to me" that caught my attention at the time, and that's the reason I still remember it. I couldn't believe that people, real people walking the streets of a real city, actually used the phrase in ordinary conversation. I recall thinking that we had clearly reached the end of civilization as we knew it, or at least, of English as we knew it.
