Got tagged by [livejournal.com profile] ranalore, so...

1) Total number of films I own on DVD/video:

45, and that's counting TV shows and anime. There might be a few more that I left at my parent's house, but really, I don't own all that many movies.

2) The last film I bought:

I got a copy of The Village for my birthday. The last one I actually bought was... probably Seven Samurai, and that was at least a year ago. Most of my movies were gifts.

3) The last film I watched:

Just like Rana, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which I loved. The last thing I watched on DVD was South Park's The Passion of the Jew, which was good, and the last DVD movie was Heavenly Creatures, which I did not like all that much.

4) Five films that I watch a lot or that mean a lot to me:

Drop Dead Gorgeous- this is the only movie I own that I watch on a regular basis. I'm not sure why; it's not really that good of a movie, and once it gets out of the high school it all falls apart. I think it's just that I've seen it so many times that I know all the jokes, and it's become a comfort-food movie.

William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet- I adore this movie so much. I wrote a paper on this movie. I love the original play, and I love the modern visuals, and I love the soundtrack, and I love the portrayal of Mercutio, in particular. I love how, in this version, the passion and the tragedy seem so overwhelming; in some versions, the focus is so much on the youth and innocence of the characters that the violence and suicides seem to come from nowhere.

Quills- Come on, how can you not love a movie with the line, "You're not the antichrist. You're only a malcontent that knows how to spell"? It's got a lot of great lines; this movie is really all about the dialouge, the interplay between the characters. Though I think love it best for the things it asks about the responsiblities of writers.

...and that's really all I've got. It's strange, because I love movies, I tend to see go and see a movie about once a week, but I just don't watch the ones that I have very often. A lot of the DVDs I own I've never watched, though I saw the movie in theatres or on TV. I see these movies, decide that I need to own them, and buy them, but then never watch them. It's just sort of... a collection impulse. Like, what if someday I have children or meet someone who's never seen BtVS, and then I need to show it to them? I'll need my own copy! But yet I'm hardly ever in the mood to independently watch a movie for myself.

I think my problem is that I'm not at all a visual person. I can't simply watch TV, either. I need to be doing something else at the same time, because the visuals alone can't keep my attention. I have to be reading, or checking LJ, or eating, or something in addition, and that need for extra distraction really lowers my drive to watch anything. It's easier if it's something I've never seen before, or a rental that has a due date, or in a darkened theatre, but movies that I own tend to stay for years in their original plastic wrap. This issue extends to my classes too, which is why all of my notes have margins covered in doodles.

5) One movie I've always meant to see, but haven't:

There's a lot, because it seems like there's so many movies which are pop-culture touchstones I've just never seen; I went on a spree trying to catch them up a little while ago, and saw for the first time Casablanca, The Godfather, Apocolypse Now, and Doctor Zhivago. One I've been trying to get around to seeing lately is Boys Don't Cry.

6) Which three people are you passing the baton onto? And why?

[livejournal.com profile] rubyd: Because I figure you probably watch some cool stuff.
[livejournal.com profile] rinoared: Because I was looking at my flist to pick someone, and I realized that I have no idea of what type of movies you watch.
[livejournal.com profile] goddessgrrrrl: Because I figure hey, why not throw it outside the fandom circle? Also, we used to go to movies all the time and I miss that.

Quills was funny! (Barring the scat at the end.) Did you notice the decapitated head at the beginning of the movie that looked like Conan O'Brien in the pile? I heard that in one of his shows, he actually got a hold of it (could have been just a fake...) - but man, wild movie.

I must think about what to write now. *ponders*

Oh, good, I'm not the only one who does this. :) It's got to the point where I'm reluctant to leave people borrow my notes because they just stare at the margins in shock.

Dude, I so have to see Quills. I can't even explain why I haven't seen it yet. One of the mysteries of the universe...

I adore Quills. But dude, I totally hadn't noticed the Conan O'Brien head! I'll have to look for it the next time I watch the movie.

Yes, exactly! I had to hand over my notes to girl who'd been absent a few weeks ago, and she didn't just handcopy them, she photocopied them, so now she will forever have my massive half-page doodle of the day.

^^; I was so embarassed.

It's a great movie. It's one of the very few movies I've ever bought without having seen first, but it worth it.

A teacher borrowed a sheet I'd doodled on to photocopy for the rest of the class. I had to give it to him, and then nearly died when everyone started commenting on what I'd drawn! Never. Again. EVER.

Ha! You definitely beat me in levels of embarrassment; I'd hate for that to happen.
