Nom nom nom

My farmers market haul:

a jar of peach raspberry jam, sugar snap peas, red dandelion greens, Saturn peaches, a quarter pound of an amazing blue cheese, a half-dozen eggs, maple sugar candy (plain and coconut flavored). Om nom nom nom nom.

Summer farmers markets are so exciting! I've never been in New York in the summer before (having been on digs continuously for the last several years) so it's all new and enthralling to me. Fruits! Veggies! Flowers! So many colors! I love my farmers market all year round, but there is something way more exciting about fresh tomatoes and peas and berries than the potatoes and apples which winter reduces the variety down to.

Wait.. there's coconut maple sugar candy!? Oh. My.

Yep. They also have ginger and pecan. I don't actually like maple sugar (or coconut), so that's for Rach.

That sounds so delicious and I am full of envy right now!

*sigh* We overslept this morning, so no farmer's market for us today. :( On the bright side, it looks like our first two Cherokee Purple tomatoes are ripe for the picking. We shall have BLT's for breakfast, nom nom nom.

Alas. I'm lucky because my farmers market runs until 5, so it's hard to oversleep it. On the other hand, there's definitely more and better selection, the earlier one can get there. Also less crowds.

And ooo, Cherokee Purple! I adore heirloom tomatoes, and that's good kind. Especially home-grown, I would think.

Pardon my de-lurking, but I'm guessing you went to the Union Square market? Because I love the maple syrup stall. My favorite is the ginger maple candy!

De-lurking is always welcome!

And yep, Union Square. It's my favorite, though I haven't been to all of the farmers markets in the city. Especially the ones on the West Side; I've been to one of those.

Do you guys eat strawberries? Miep and I made organic jam/sauce a few weeks ago. It's a bit thin and works great on ice cream and waffles and such. If there is room in returning luggage I would surely send a jar.

I love strawberries, but I'm not sure if Rach does. But certainly, if you don't mind, I'd love a jar. Thank you so much!

Yeah. I try to comfort myself by thinking of winter vegetables that I don't eat very often- I don't think I've ever had a turnip!- but come on, turnips are not that exciting.

I've been really excited about peaches this season; though the cheese sounds quite tasty, too.

Also, unrelated, but would you be free for lunch/coffee/something on the 4th/5th? A friend and I are going to be in the city a couple days to see Depeche Mode, and it'd be great to see you again. :)

Peaches are one of my favorite fruits; I remember eating them rolled in sugar when I was little so vividly.

Yes! But it'll have to be the 4th, since I am flying out of the city to go see my family on the 5th. I'm pretty much free all day, so just let me know when/where works for you. Yay!

Okay! That should be good. I'll try to figure out when we'll be getting into the city; is your cell number still the same as it was, er, a couple years ago?

[identity profile] chiklita.livejournal.com 2009-07-26 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
All of that sounds so. good. But I've never had any of it (except eggs)! I'm deprived :(

Some of them are new to me, too! I've never had dandelion greens before, but I love broccoli greens and couldn't find any, so I thought I'd try these. And I'd never had Saturn peaches until this morning, when I ate one at breakfast, and I can confirm: super awesome. Sweeter and juicer than regular peaches.
