Hmm, let's see. If they have Descendants of Darkness, I really recommend it. They might not, though, it just came out and it's not widely available.
Fruits Basket is a very, very cutesy story about an orphan girl. A lot of people like it, and it's funny and sweet, but it ended up being too cute for me, and I quit buying it. Of course, that's subjective, and a lot of people do find it interesting. If you like sweet romances, I'd reccommend it. If that sounds good, Fushigi Yugi is another similiar one.
Revolutionary Girl Utena is one I really like. The whole series is only five books long, but it's a very interesting femslash story. Lots of gender-bending and swordfights and talk about princes and princesses. The downside to this one is that it's very confusing, and the mythology behind it sometimes doesn't make a lot of sense.
Gravitation is probably my favorite manga coming out right now; it's kind of a warped romance between two guys, a romance novel writer and a rock star. But the romance writer is a very jaded, cold, unfeeling kind of guy, and the rock star is a bouncy, fresh-out-of-high-school, super-optomistic kid. The story's all about their relationship, which they try to keep hidden to stay out of the tabloids. On the other hand, this does not have the best art ever, and the characterization can be really weird. (Like when one of the characters gets raped and everyone seems to have forgotten it by the next chapter.)
Another popular one is X/1999, which is a dark Apocolypse tale, with serial killers and gods and prophtesses hidden under Japanese goverment buildings. This is a pretty long series, though, and I hear it takes a while to really get into it.
FAKE is about two New York City cops, who end up getting into a relationship. There's lots of case-solving and adventures, and one of the cops adopts this really cute street kid. Personally, I'm not in love with this one, but maybe that's just because I never liked mysteries all that much, and one of the characters is just *so* clueless that it bugged me.
Let's see, what else... Rourini Kenshin is the story of a samurai, set back in the historical era of Japan, it's very popular. Saiyuki is the modern retelling of an ancient Japanese/Chinese legend about bringing Buddha to the East, it's supposed to be pretty good. My little brother adores Initial D, but unless you're really into cars, I wouldn't recommend it. A lot of my friends have been talking about Hot Gimmick, which is a cute love triangle between (I think) a girl, her neighbor, and a classmate. Angel Sancturary is supposed to be very good but very weird, and it features a relationship between a brother and a sister, so don't get that if you don't like incest. Petshop of Horrors is a neat, Twilight-Zone like manga, that is a bunch of mostly unrelated stories.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Hope it helped! :)
