(no subject)
I'm starting a meme! Because I'm bored and I want to see if it actually takes off.
So, I like first lines. They're hard to do well. And there was a meme that went around a while ago about the first lines of your own fanfic. This version is much more plain, just the first lines of books I've read recently.
“It starts with the earth.”
-All Over Creation, Ruth Ozeki
“Oshima did not know what to think when she first heard hints from her foster parents, the Mizushimas, that they intended to marry her soon to a young man whom they would then adopt as their son and heir.”
-Rough Living ( Arakure), Tokuda Shusei
“You think you know how this story is going to end, but you don’t.”
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal, Christopher Moore
“From the arable river lands to the south, the approach to Montfiore appears a sequence of relaxed hills.”
-Mirror, Mirror, Gregory Maguire
“It ended with a dream.”
-Kushiel’s Avatar, Jacqueline Carey
“The municipal airport of Manhattan, Kansas, was low and brown and rectangular, and had a doorway that led direct from the runway.”
-Was, Geoff Ryman
“Coraline discovered the door a little while after they moved into the house.”
-Coraline, Neil Gaiman
“May in Ayemenem is a hot, brooding month.”
-The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy
“People are afraid to merge on freeways in Los Angeles.”
-Less Than Zero, Bret Easton Ellis
“’Something a little strange, that’s what you notice, that she’s not a woman like all the others.’”
-Kiss of the Spider Woman, Manuel Puig
